Note Taking Template

Photographers have been writing notes about their image taking since the quill pen...well, almost. We write down shutter speed, aperture, flash setting, white balance, filter(s), exposure compensation, and who knows what. Does anyone know if someone has created a template for photographers to keep shooting notes? The template would have preprinted categories and the user just fills in the blanks.

If not, how about a project for an UHHer?

EXIF Metadata will record most of that information automatically.

Years ago B&H Photo sold pocket notebooks for photographers that were laid out in just such a manner. I used to use them, they were sold by the dozen in a package, 50 sheets to the notebook, 6 frames to the page, double sided. I think they used to be about $3.00 per pack. But I haven't seen them in about 8 or 10 years. They were made by Kodak, surprise huh? If I remember right all that was on the front cover besides the Kodak logo was the name "Foto-Note".

I used to use these little spiral notebooks . Then the last thing that goes on the page was the image number from the little screen . Film days was easy , I had a one in 12 chance to get the right info with the right photo . Worst was one in 36 :)

I have experimented with photo databases on Windows computers (for film shots - especially 4 X 5). Maybe you could do something with a spreadsheet on a smart phone or iPad.

Just a small note pad is needed to record where the picture wast taken, and why, the rest in in the camera.

I created a database on my iPod using HanDBase. It allows you to design an infinate number of databases with custom entry screens. You can sort in many different ways.

I use it when shooting film or for digital when I use older manul lenses, etc. that do not provide EXIF data. Also for short location notes. It was $9.95 when I bought it. Google it for a free trial.

I just started using a program called PIE, it records that data on each shot. and you can add notes. And it's free
