I'm having issues with a D5100. (dropped off a filing cabinet) I know at one time we had a UHH'er who did Nikon repairs. Can anyone point me in his (or her) direction? I've heard KEH does repairs. Anyone had experience with them? I thought about just sending it to Nikon but they are a bit pricey for someone on my budget. I've also heard that their repair people seem to consider these older less expensive models to be 'disposable'.

I have used Nikon for repairs. Yes the are expensive but you will get a perfect camera back. You pay a minimum of about $200 for diagnosis. Repairs are capped so they don't break the bank. Given the replacement price it would be a break even to move up to a D7200. I doubt anyone can do as well cheaper

I would take it to the nearest camera store that fixes and sells them and if they don't give free appraisal , maybe I would go for no more than a $20
To have it checked . But not much more .and if they did want a check out fee
I would make sure that is waved if I had them do the work . And if it is going
To cost two or three hundred less than what you payed for camera . I would
Get a new body or a refurbished one . You can get a better model than the one you have for less money only it will be refurbished . That's the only way I would get a different camera . For instance a refurb d 7100 body etc

It's not that these cameras are disposable, but that it may be cheaper to replace rather than repair. An "excellent" used D5100 from KEH is $248, somewhat less on eBay. That should be the maximum you should pay for repair + shipping. Or take that money and put it toward an upgraded camera. If possible, go to a local camera shop and get an estimate of repair costs, then make a decision.

Rick has recently overcome some medical challenges and has relocated. He got behind for a while, but is ramping up for full scale service. Let's all hope that he has no more health setbacks to stymie his efforts. As a personal note, if Rick reads this, I would be interested in knowing if Rick is mentoring other technicians to achieve his high rate of successful repairs at fair prices.

As math78 said, it may be cheaper to replace it than to repair it. Nikon service is fast and good.

I don't know about where you are, but here is the UK nikon doesn't release any spare parts to any retailer or repair agent. Meaning if your camera needs new parts and someone's claiming they can fix it, unless they've stripped another camera of the same model to get it, they won't be nikon parts going into your camera

Nikon USA also does not release spare parts to non-Nikon repair facilities so anything that a non-Nikon affiliated repair facility uses would be off of stripped or grey market cameras. Nikon Repair (anything west of the Mississippi River goes to Los Angeles and east of the Mississippi goes to Melville NY) is then either repaired in their facility or (depending on backlog) shipped to one of their branch repair facilities, such as Camtek. Adorama, B&H, Cameta, etc. There are a few other authorized repair facilities in the US and you can check on Nikon for the addresses but often times, these repair specific items and they send cameras that don't meet their criteria to Nikon USA to be resent to other facilities. I think there are a couple in the Texas area, one in Alabama, Georgia etc. But, ALL will charge the Nikon rate. If Nikon does the repair (as with any Nikon repair), they do NOT just fix the broken part, but go through the entire camera, lens, or strobe and bring it completely back up to new camera specs.

I hate to be the only one with negative feedback about the quality of Nikon's service in Melville, but lately it has been unacceptable. I've had to return both my D750 and D300 after having them repaired for different reasons. The D750 came back mostly repaired but still with a focus indicator problem, and my D300 was just sent back for the second time with a viewfinder problem. It's as if the techs are not carefully reading the documentation that is sent with the cameras. To make matters worse, their tech reps who answer the phone or e-mail messages are either not knowledgeable or are in such a hurry, they are not reading what is in front of them. Even their online response system is spitting out senseless answers to my simple questions. For example, when I asked if the problem with my D300's viewfinder can be fixed at a reasonable cost, my answer was, "We are glad we were able to solve your metering problem." Ugh!!! It's been terribly frustrating, especially since I'm a member of NPS, which is supposed to provide priority service. These experiences are causing me to lose faith in the brand, and I now find myself relying more and more on my Fuji XT-1 system. For future service, I'm going to take my Nikons to a local Nikon dealer where I can actually speak with the guys working on my gear. What a shame, because Nikon service used to have a good reputation.

I think you hit the nail on the head here, "It's as if the techs are not carefully reading the documentation that is sent with the cameras." But it's not limited to Nikon. I've experienced this with many places I've sent stuff for repair, discussed on the phone, or even just queried via email.
They just don't read what you say!

Thanks for that. It's funny that they have a limited number of models listed for Nikon. I'm guessing the fee for a D3200 or a D3300 would be the same as the D3000 - maybe.
