I will be taking this plunge and would like to hear from some hedgehogs about their experiences. Thanks!

I used my Nikon 500mm f/4 on all of these shots in this thread. It is a very long, heavy lens, shallow depth of field, very sharp. Wouldn't dream of selling mine now that I own it, great lens.

My only thought is I'm jealous. :) Can't wait to see your shots with it.

I had the first VR version of it and went to a 600mm. Still not sure if it was the right choice. The 500 F4 is a fantastic lens, manageable in size and super sharp. I do miss it at times!

A few samples...

Not to interrupt the thread too much, but I have the new 80-400 and wasn't overly pleased with detail using the new 1.4 TC. I'll do some more definitive testing tomorrow, but I stopped using it on my Yellowstone shoot a couple weeks ago. Unfortunately, a lot of my work was hand held due to "exigent circumstances", but I'm curious for sure. Hate to relegate it's use to just the 70-200 2.8. I mention this because I know from the New Zealand interview that they are in your arsenal.

One of my next questions was going to be about the 1.4 TC with the 500mm. Are the results what you would hope for?

I don't have the 500 and never will if I choose to live longer. I picked up the 70-200 2.8 and the 80-400 plus the new 1.4 for our trip and my wife thinks that I bought her enough toys.....fear and common sense suddenly come in to play.

I use both the 1.4 and 1.7tc ii on my 500mm. Here is a moon shoot with my D610, Nikon 500 f/4 and the 1.7 tc. The 1.4 tc has even less distortion.

Thank you. My equipment outshines my know how so far, but it is fun learning and improving with practice and great advice from UHH members and links.
