We Are All Hard Wired to Read What We View

My cat, a beautiful creature, showed up one day a mixture of the best of breeds, Blue Eyes, Siamese muscles, and multi tan, black, white fur. She is an out door cat and has no interest for inside or my lap. A Beast of Nature. Sound and image, ears and eyes and she reacts tho having been on her own without teachings.... cats are hard wired to react to images .... so are we. Some of our wiring is cultural, we read photos from lower left to upper right, foreground to background, and how in part the way our written language is structured. Or our writing is structured to match or hard wiring. True other cultures differ.

My first year in the Tampabay Camera Club was a disaster!! OK, what is wrong with what I do? OUCH, I was told. Now the club critiques for improvement each and every submissions. Most submitted images are projected and so can be manipulated with Lightroom in real time. Judges first, then audience make suggestions, perhaps 40 in a night: one image becomes many. The second year I won 3rd place in year long cumulative competition. Now I have fun pushing the limits.

Very helpful is a huge free works by the department of psychology at Riders University Trenton NJ. The works follow a strict protocol for interviewing of groups of students and their reaction to images. There is (to a degree) a uniformity of our human reaction to various compositions .... follow that hard wiring and get the predicted reaction. Sweet vs Sour? Yes? Amazing!! As I tell my friend/student in England, it is like cooking scones...

My greatest tool is crop to a short story ... you can not see the forest for the trees.. No, you can not see the bush and bird because the forest detract.... if it does not add it detracts... remove it from the photo or depress/darken and blur. This is just one of the many lessons in the reference and reinforced by the professionals at the club. Have fun... tell a story. Read section at a time:

Welcome to the section! Thank you for this resource, it looks fascinating and I will enjoy working my way through it - definitely my kind of material. I finally plowed through Arnheim's Art and Visual Perception and loved it. This looks to be much more accessible and fun.
