Lines and reflections

I liked the way the beams of this building look like a prow of a ship. Then I noticed that the reflection was actually quite nice as well. Do you think this composition is too busy?

Ok, thanks. That is good information. If that is the first impression that this photo makes, it is right in step with what my intentions for the viewer are. Thanks you for your comment.

Not too busy at all. Is this your only shot, or did you take others from different positions?

It looks like you used some perspective correction in post processing. The PC to get the vertical lines parallel is just right.

The correction would have been less severe if you had used a wider angle lens. This would have allowed you to hold the camera more level. You would just have needed to crop off some of the bottom and less PC to get the verticals parallel.

I honestly would not have even wondered if it was too busy until you asked. I keep looking at it, and no, I don't think it's too busy because the reflection of the older building is dark enough, subdued enough that you hardly notice it, but it does provide a nice contrast (maybe even dissonance) between old and modern. At a glance one's eye goes straight to the very powerful "prow." an excellent picture!

Gosh no Erich.
Everything in this shot is key to a very appealing facet of the composition.
I've said it before -- you excel in this kind of work.
Go with your instincts.

I understand what you mean. I checked the data and I shot this with an 85mm prime. From where I was standing, my wide angle would have gotten the whole building. Point well taken because there is some distortion. When I was shooting, I honestly did not even consider the wide angle allowing me to keep the camera more level; but you are right about that. Maybe next time I'm in Boston I'll get a chance to re shoot it. Thank you for your very thoughtful and insightful comment.

Thank you so much. If your eye goes right to the "prow", then I did my job. I really appreciate your comments.

I will freely admit I would have walked right past this and missed out on a really striking image. Its what a lot would desperately try and achieve in their desire to be considered "arty" but this has the appearance of being effortless. Almost as if you were not looking for a shot but just spotted it. That's why I think it works so well.
Great process and a fine post Erich.

Thank you so much. I can't say that it was actually "effortless". I had about three hours to kill in downtown Boston with my camera. I started out thinking that I wanted to get some photos that would work well in black and white. So that was on my mind. The rest was just pointing at interesting things and shapes and contrasts. I think I got lucky with this one. Worked out quite well. Thanks for your comments.

IMHO, this is perfectly done in every respect; this could be an abstract photo contest winner.
