Epson Pro 3880 and Hot Press Bright Paper

I have been trying to print from (Lightroom 5.7) to my 3880 on Epson Hot Press Bright paper. I load the paper into the rear feeder (is that correct?) and when I print, I get an error message "load paper". In addition, in Lightroom, for "media type", I select "matte", yet my ink says "photo black". I have printed on Hot Press Bright only once, nearly a year ago, as it came as part of the sample pack included with the printer. The prints came out fine. Unfortunately, I cannot remember the settings I used, but there were no error messages.

I am doing a lot of printing using Epson Ultra Premium Photo Paper Luster (my standard paper) with no difficulty, so I know there is no problem with the printer.

Can someone help?
Thanks.
Steve

Hi. I don't know Lightroom so I may be off the wall, here. But does Lightroom store any information that is specific to the paper onto which you're trying to print? If so, then perhaps the directions for the printer are different for the two papers. For instance, the printer may think it has to use one of the other feeds. In that case, just try feeding the paper into the front feeder, and then into the sheet feeder. If one of them works, my guess was correct.

Otherwise, sorry . . .

Thanks. Actually you're pretty close. As far as I can tell, it's not Lightroom that stores the settings, but the printer. For hot press bright I needed to set printer settings to use the rear feeder, and then, obviously feed the paper through that feeder. Works great. Very good guess! Thanks again. Steve

Glad I could help. (???) And what about the photo black versus matte black?

Good question. I did not realize that the printer does not automatically make the change. I have to make the change manually with the controls on the printer panel. This is a nuisance but once I got accustomed to it, it just became part of the routine. The problem is, the switch from photo to matte black uses a lot of ink. So I try to print everything I need to on luster paper before switching over to hot press bright.

Again, I'm a bit surprised. I think you should have separate presets, one for your matte black Hot Press and one (or, even more than one) for your photo black papers -- including luster. Then, for each preset in printer settings, select the paper and save the preset. That should save you from going to all those places to with your choices.

As for switching back and forth from matte to photo, I print "only" in matte -- it takes a huge reason to make me have to switch. For you, just save your printing into batches and switch as infrequently as possible -- as I hope you already do.
