I have Nikon D50 that has started to occasionally have a darker color or a blackness on the bottom of a picture. The camera is several years old and has shot over 75,000 pictures. Any ideas?

Are you using a flash? If your shutter speed is too fast the shutter actually gets in the way of the light, causing that kind of darkening at the edge of your shot. If you're not using flash, then could be a problem with the shutter itself.

Is it like that with every shot?

It appears that your shutter may be hanging up. Maybe a cleaning?

Definitely a shutter curtain synch problem. Time for service and maybe a new shutter.

Sometimes flash sometimes not.

No. It is good for a while and then this happens.

Is a new shutter expensive- would I be better off just starting with a new camera body?

The cost of the shutter itself is not that bad, but probably more than the D50 is worth in itself. I would suggest that it may be time to look at what else is out there, new or refurb, or even good quality used. I think you would be better off that way.

I would suggest you take a look at B&H, Adorama and KEH and see what they have for refurbished or used. Any of the three mentioned are very reputable and you will not be disapointed.

The mirror problem could cause this too.
The mirror is on top, but the shadow would show up on the bottom of the photo.
Since it happens with & without flash, that would be my guess.

And maybe a cleaning would clear that up?

If it were the shutter , wouldn't it be on the side ? I thought the shutter went from left to right.
