Just about sunset yesterday afternoon, I stopped along side of the road and started taking pictures of the old aircraft carrier in mothball storage at the Newport RI Navy Base. I parked in an unused turnoff and was outside the fence. After five minutes of me standing on top of a Jersey barrier, shooting pictures over the fence I hear sirens coming. WHOOPS !!! Navy police wanted to know what I was doing !!! "Just taking pictures of the old carrier" I said. They wanted to see them !! They looked at the photos I had on both cameras. Everything was "OK". I apoligized said that I was sorry and that I didn't realize that I was doing anything wrong. He explained that they just don't allow pictures to be taken that included the entry point of a military installation. What I had images of was fine !!!

After a while the officer asked me if I had used HDR and how I liked my Nikon ?? He was a photographer !!! So we started chatting. I told him that I was trying to get a symbolic picture of the setting sun behind the old carrier as it was in it's "sunset years". Yes, he said that was a photographer's dream shot............. Anyway he left and I left. Afterwards I thought I should have asked him if I could wait ten more minutes and get the sun lower. All ended well !!! Except that I didn't quite get the sun low enough !!!

GC, Great story, I am originally from Cranston. My experience was similar, but after I gave a very different response to..."what are you doing?". I was near the Rockefeller property in Westchester NY taking some pics of a great brick wall covered in climbing roses. After a few mins. a car pulled up and a large gentleman got out and asked what I was doing. I looked in front of me at the camera monunted on the tripod, turned to the guy and said..."Playing golf." He smiled at me and asked the question again and I explained that I had seen the wall and wanted to photograph it. He looked at all the pics and examined my camera bag.

I never realized that the family had the entire area covered by surveillance cameras. At the end of te day I got my shot and no harm done. I'm attaching it below if you're interested. Please post your photo so we can see how it turned out.

Keep shooting.

If you hadn't been so nice they would have had no choice but to treat you as the threat. In these times I wouldn't blame them. I live near a Navy Weapons base and there's a stretch of road that is fenced on both sides and topped off with barbed wire. There are signs posted the whole 1 mile stretch that say "No Stopping Any Time". I have a friend that stopped to get an image of a Red Tail Hawk on top of a phone pole. He wasn't there for 2 minutes when the same thing happened to him. It turned out the same as you ordeal did. But I found out that they mean business when it comes to people stopping next to any armed forces perimeter. One day I hope to get on the list of people allowed to enter the base and take pictures. They make you sign a consent form to check you before leaving and to check all your images. This Navy Weapons Base has a lot of wildlife on it and they like to keep it looking natural from the air/sky in case of spy satelite photographs.

Reminds me of my friend who, years ago, was getting some experience operating a mainframe computer as part of his overall indoctrination. He was running what he knew was a long payroll job, so he was sitting there doing a crossword puzzle. He paid no attention as other people suddenly seemed very busy. He wasn't aware that the division manager was paying a visit. When someone behind him asked, "What are you doing?" he replied, "43 Down." The DM wanted his ass fired, but when he told the manager who was responsible for his training what had happened, the manager just about fell out of his chair laughing.

2 weeks ago we were in Vegas and on the way to the Valley of Fire,we stopped at Nellis AFB to take some pictures of some of the planes in the pattern. We came in the main part of the base and was told I would have to go to the visitors area to do that....after taking 4 pictures,a guard came yelling acrossed the parking lot saying to stop taking pictures and to come over to him. I did and explained what I was trying to do and was then told not to do it anymore and he wanted to see and delete the pictures I had...I showed him the pictures and was told it was ok to keep them, but to not take pictures of the base. I complied and wished him a good day. The funny part is ,if you Google Earth the base you can see everything..YF-22's,F-16's ,A-10's...everything ! Just seems kind of silly..lol
