What makes a lens a 1000 dollar, or a 2000 dollar, or a 10,000 dollar? If it is the grade of glass? What makes one glass better than another?

Short answer: Lots of hands on, technical, precise, expensive equipment, R&D, testing, attention to all critical aspects (many) and lengthy processes, etc.

How long do you have to research or even read the answers to those questions?

There some recent videos from canon about their lens technology that talk about that, also some from Samyang and others. There are lens coatings, aspherical designs, ultra low dispersion glass and things like fluorite....

The list goes on....

What the market is willing to pay for it.
How well does it perform, both optically and mechanically.
How reliable is it.

Some of this is from personal experience. Priceas are in Australian $$

Purchased a Tokina 80-400 from a grey market importer for $700 (recomended retail was approx $1000 (I think)).
30 photographs latter the lens failed to auto focus.
The grey market importer replaced it.

It was a good lens howver it also failed to auto focus after 14 months and approx 1400 photographs.
The grey market importer was not in business any more and then I found out the "value" of an international warrenty.

Replaced the lens with a Canon 100-400 from a grey market importer (with a real store) for $1800 (recomended retail was approx $2700)
It was a great lens.
6 years and approx 240,000 photographs it failed mechanically.

To me the more expensive lens was worth it.

Trai oi and oy vey all over again!

Let's do a quick review.

(1) In February you asked, "Other than price is there a good way to tell if a lens is good glass?", and received over 30 responses.

(2) In August you spent a thousand bucks for a Tammy 150-600.

(3) Now you ask, "What makes one glass better than another?"

Maybe you should have followed up with #3 before purchasing in #2?

Quality of glass, quality of craftsmanship, max aperture, whether a zoom lens hold the max aperture throughout the range of focal lengths, too many things to list them all.

Hey, UHH makes money selling advertising space. The more hits they get, the more cash they make.

I will bet you 1/10 of these types of threads are spoofs to get the numbers up. ;)

What makes you think it's 1/10 instead of 1/5 or 1/15.

If I pick a fight with you over Sony vs say Pentax, can we split the commission?

Thank you, Ray. but you don't have to spend a lot for "good glass". A lot of the price depends on the "latest and greatest". Honestyl, the most I've spent on a lens is $3500 for a used $7000 lens and I rarely use it because I can get better results from a newer $1K lens, like your 150-600. And I have 70-200 AF-Nikkor's for under $100 dollar that compete very well with my $2400 70-200 f/2.8.

You don't need the best glass to get good pics. Use what you have.

But do it!.

Thanks for the reply Oddjob. I have been doing some research on Macro lenses lately. I would like to make that my next purchase. I am checking out the 100mm Canon with macro. But as you noted I just bought a new Tammy. Which I realy like. The wife may not agree with me spending another 800 simolians. By the way every time I see your picture , I think of Donald Sutherland!!
