I slipped on a step awhile back and took a tumble. My camera hit the ground even though I tried to cradle it (so did my face). The lens wasn't damaged but the lens shade, which was reversed, got jammed and cross-threaded. I can't get it off and straightened out. Anyone have any ideas?

Have you stopped by a camera shop, not best buy but a real camera shop? They might be able to help.

Have you tried squeezing the lens shade to try and reshape it while unscrewing it? I know you won't have a lot of room to squeeze as it will be close to the lens body, but hopefully it won't take much squeezing.

And, I hope your face heals quickly and well.

I would microwave a damp towel. Fold the towel to lenshood width and wrap it around the hood. Im thinking that if you can heat up the hood (without heating the lens) the plastic may become a little more pliable. Thats the only thing I can think of :?:

Face was OK but scratched my glasses. With a face this old damage hardly shows!

Hi billwassmann: Here is an idea, use a oil filter wrench, with it you can get a decent bite and have leverage to help remove the lens shade. They can be had at most auto parts stores, that is unless you already have one laying around. You might also consider placing something like a soft cloth between the inside of the wrench and the lens shade to keep it from getting scuffed. Hope this helps

I've got one of them thingies that old people use to open jars with tight lids. It looks like a big plastic nut cracker with rubber jaws. Cost me $1.99 at the kitchen gaget store.

Of course I'm not old enough to use it yet, but have it just in case !!! Just sayin !!

Yeah, you look like a kid to me. At 83 everyone looks like a kid. That idea is similar to the one about oil filter wrench. Thanks

If you can find a WIDE rubber band that fits tightly around the hood, they usually give you a good grip and apply uniform pressure to remove it. Remember, the harder you squeeze, the more you distort the hood making it harder to remove.

I think that an oil filter wrench has a metal band and will scratch your hood. The kitchen thingy has a rubber jaw and won't scratch (also perfect for the occasional overtightened lens filter). It's worth a look anyway !!!

And at 83 you might need it to open a jar or two later on !!! Take it from me....them jelly jars get stuck if you don't lick the threads !!!!

I had the same situation when by camera and 70-200 f4 lens fell off my monopod shade first onto a concrete floor. It was jambed so bad that I couldn't remove it by hand. After getting home, I put a small block of wood up against the shade then tapped it with a rubber hammer. It came loose after a few taps.

Think expansion and contraction/cooling one and heating the other, one expands and the other contracts. Use caution with the temperatures. It works with pressed bearings and tight fitting parts.

what about one of those rubber jar top openers...you know the rubber strap that you would wind around the lid to give more grip? The warm towel in conjunction with the strap (or even the filter wrench) may do the trick....Just make sure you're much more careful of the lens and not the hood....good luck and glad you weren't seriosly hurt..
