new in photos-- doing a family reunion ,outside. what is the lowest cost wide lins for a canon xsi 450d doing a 50 people group
You might want to check out KEH for a used lens.
http://www.keh.com/?gclid=COaXrdu8qa8CFaldTAodEDJnCA Sigma makes some pretty good lenses, cost a bit less than the Canon equivalent.
I have a Sigma 10-20 zoom.
If you buy the lowest cost, you may get what you pay for, if you know what I mean.
If you only want to use it for this one occasion, I would rent a good one, like the one suggested below. RentGlass is one place that's been mentioned here. Welcome!

I have a Canon 10-22mm EF S lens that, if I remember correctly,
cost about $800 and is very sharp and has no distortion of any kind.
So in my opinion it may be something for you to consider.
Changed mind, read the posting wrong.
Why not rent a good lens for the occasion? It will give you better resolution and you'll get more kudos when you send out the pics.

Golly, just had to open my bag to take another loving look at my Tokina 12-24 f/4 IF DX. Great rectilinear lens with a front element mounted so I can get a 77mm U/V thin ring filter on it without vignetting. It's the only lens I have used on my old 20D that lets me take a full side view shot of the 100 foot long cab-forward locomotive and tender at a nearby railroad museum.
That's a nice lens, but with a crop sensor camera, that's not wide at all. (like a 56mm on a full frame camera which is "normal") The OP probably has an 18-55 at minimum.

A 35mm lens on a crop body camera is not a wide angle lens. It is the equivalent of a 56mm lens. You really need to get down into the teens to be really wide angle.
By the way, you don't necessarily need a wide angle lense, just move back as far as possible. If that's not practical, stack them in rows so the group is not so wide.

Do you mean A LENS. Read your 3rd grade speller.

Now that's a nice welcome!
BTW- you forgot the question mark (?) after the word "lens".
Basic punctuation, also found in the 3rd grade speller.

Friendly saying, "NOT NICE!!" Lens means having more than one glass inside of the lens. So can say the lens or a lens. More than one lens, it is lenses. Get it :?:
To me, spelling incorrect or out of context in the various threads, is of little concern to me. I note to myself when something is wrong, but no one is coming to these forums to learn to spell or how to use good grammar. They are here about photography.
I will say that it's obvious to me that few people are here to learn how to get along with others.
Most of us are fairly tolerant though, and I would hope that if anyone is offended by what one person does, to just remember that there are a lot of people on the forums, and 1 out of a hundred isn't so bad.
Is there an English test today? Sh*t! I forgot to study!
