While in some small way it may be possible to use a 1.4 TC with this lens - it will be very challenging - and the results will reflect that challenge ! How much AF you get ( if any) will depend on your exact camera body and the strength of your lighting.

The best thing I can tell you is instead of a TC , just crop your image and use properly/well applied softwares for sharpening and to enlarge your pixel count. That way you do not loose any light to the TC.

"to enlarge your pixel count". That is a concept I have not considered. More information please. If you increase pixel count will that increase iq. Many of the images I consider working with require a significant crop to get the frame I am looking for, but typically result in quite a bit of noise. Would increasing the pixel count help?

From my experience, increasing your pixel count ( intelligently with specialized software and/or techniques) will not "increase" your IQ - just helps to prevent you from loosing IQ.

I have been using the Sony in camera Clear Image Zoom ( 1.1-2X) as well as the default Adobe Bicubic Smoother in increments of 10% or less ( up to 40% - 4X10%) with good success (IMO). There are much more costly and elaborate software out there that MAY do better in some very small way.

I am new to digital. But on my film cameras I would often use teleconverters without serious problems. Yet with digital cameras nobody has anything good to say about them. I bought a Vivitar 2X that you put in front of your lens and found it to be garbage, in either auto or manual mode. I know that they would not work well in AF, but in manual, with a good lens up front and the TC mounted between it and the camera, and in manual mode, shouldn't they be OK?? Thanks.

It depends on what your "OK" is ....as in all things photographic, there is a wide spectrum of quality in lenses and TC's ! The best lenses with the best TC's are very good ! Everything else, not so much......

  You'll get more by cropping and using a good resizing software (Not your regular editing program, PS, PSP, etc.) like Onone Perfect Resize.

OK means you get an exposure. Lighting, sharpness etc should be resonable, not outstanding, hence OK.
