I've been working with my tec ccd and bight my cheek this is some tough stuff to learn. I'm entering uncharted water when it comes to long exposure but, I have achieved focus finally and took a 5sec frame of m45{Pleiades} last night" I think", it's seven stars nice and tight but, I forgot to do 2x2 Binning to gather the nebulosity. I still haven't a clue as to what I'm doing. I haven't figured out how to convert a 16 bit fits to a jpeg for posting so , yall can see what I'm doing. Help, just kick me like a can down the road to get me going on this adventure ? Save me from driving in circles, I'm making that continuous right turn.

It's all baby steps. It took me months of trying, experimenting, and deleting, to even begin to get pictures with my Orion G3 CCD.
Took me until very recently to figure out it's color capabilities.
And that is since last April...
It's all baby steps. And then the clouds roll in. :-(

Good luck Stepping I wish I could help you out but right now I only shoot DSLRs.

First off what camera model are you using is it a OSC or a monochrome camera and which program are you using to view your fits files. I would assume that the same program that you are using to capture your image could be used to save as 16-bit TIFF but I could be wrong. Fits Liberator is a free open source program that will convert your fits file into TIFF or JPEG. I have not personally use this program to much as it seems a little complicated and clunky. The hardest thing for me to overcome using CCD was the lack of Live View.

I often find my fit files to be unfit for fiddling with....
It leaves me fit to be tied.

   Oh I crack myself up!

The Orion program lets me pick a looping shot for fine focusing. So that is like a sort of live view.
Interestingly enough, my guide camera doesn't hardly need any focusing attention. Pick a blob, and lock it on. :-D

I'm using a old meade pictor imager/ guider tec ccd mono with an Orion filter wheel and meade lrgb filters Oknoder. I've had it for over a year , trying to collect the cables needed to get it working with my laptop. Sonny , you're a trip, funny guy and hopefully this forum can give this disabled amateur ASTRONOMER plenty of benefit to image these awesome targets in the night sky.

What cables do you still require. I have a drawer full of cables with duplicates aplenty. If I have what you need or can fabricate it I would be more than willing to help. Being a fellow disabled astronomer if we cannot get the older Pictor to work, I have a newer than the Pictor but still old Meade DSI3 it is the color version and I have since lost the IR blocking piece of film but you are more than welcome to it.

That sounds great Mathew, I've been struggling with this for over 2 yrs. trying to get something that looks like what I'm seeing {a screen of dots}. I think that the pictor is really for someone that can get up and down to place the dust cover on the ota everytime an image is took just to take a dark frame. It's increasing the pain in my legs and back. I'm not enjoying this pictor that a friend gave to me. Is THE DSI3 a plug n play with a usb cord? I'm sure getting excited can you HELP me to get going with this cam? I've also got brain damage and my cognitive isn't good . My adress is 621 Meadowbrook rd. Kings Mountain ,NC 28086. Anything else let me know?

The Meade deep sky imager 3 is not cool nor does have a shutter it has only one interface cord which is a USB2 male A to a male B. Fairly common cord there is some software that has to be downloaded or I can include it cold autostar. Even if you do not use this software to control the camera that must be installed because otherwise there are no drivers at least that I could find.

I will hit you up later this afternoon in PM and let you know all the details about when/how I'm going to send it.

Clear skies,
Matthew

That sound great Mathew, I'm getting such great transpency and seeing for the past 8 nights and forecast to continue into the weekend. USB interface is alright by me, autostar suite cool go ahead and download it for me I'm not good with computers {illiterate} , I Can a IR/UV cut filter be screwed on the nose piece. I've been doing lunar and Planetary for over 3 years and my images are showing alot better now than a yr. and even 2 yrs. ago , I've wanted to learn DSO imaging and hit some of those deepspace faint fuzzies. I'm trying to do as good a job as I can and enjoy myself but, my Cervicle damage limits me in what I do and how long I do it. At least I've got Alanna {CNA} to set me up and pack it in every night. She loves the looks on my face when it all comes together and I get some really good data. :D

If using a refractor an IR filter is suggested as the IR spectrum will not align with the normal RGB channels. If using strictly mirror optics I have been told it isn't necessary. It is a standard thread I wanna say 49mm but I can measure when I get home.

I use mirror optics and can I add this camera to autostars camera list? Please, can you download software so I don't mess it up Mathew. I'm almost all ready to go tonight, just waiting for Polaris and Kochab to reveal themselves. It'll be a cold one out in the backyard tonight with fwhm low I hope. I just found out what that means {FWHM}.

I am not sure I understand your question about the autostar camera list.I know you can use the Meade autostar suite or autostar envision to control the camera and a compatable mount. I tried using it to control my older xl200 without a whole lot of success.

If I misunderstood maybe you can clarify so I can answer your questions appropriately.

It was a cold night and my nose is red as an cherry, in autostar suite when you click on image across the top, it has a dropdown box with lpi , dsi, pictor imaging, pictor autoguiding and dslr control. I'd cklick on DSI and that would activate the camera ? I've got 2 usb A to B a 3' and a 6' and I should be set. AS is ok, a bit confusing but, what isn't in astronomy . I did get some lunar video's and snaps from the SSUEll and a 3x barlow tracking was pretty good tonight.
