Best Canon lens for portraits???

Hello friends, I am setting up a small studio for portraits. I have an old 70-200L lens that was given to me, it is so clear and beautiful, I love it. I have a newer 70-200 lens I bought in a camera package deal that can't even start my old lens for clarity. The problem is that my studio area is small and I have to be apx 7 ft. from my subject to shoot (with my old/good lens) by the time I add some DOF room I'm out of space. I have rented a brand new 85 mm prime that fits the set up, but it just isn't clear like my old lens. So...what is the best lens to purchase for portraits that is crystal clear that will shoot at a reasonable distance??? Thanks, WSL

Given your space limitations; I'd use an 85mm f/1.2L
You could try the 50mm f1.2L also.

You tried an 85mm that "fit your set up....hmmm 85mm being longer than 70mm....
Why don't you stick to your old trusty 70-200L lens?

My 24-70 is also a newer "L" also, but it is still not as crisp as my old lens.

Well, I know this doesn't make sense, but even though my trusty antique is a zoom, I think it's jammed on the longer length, but I won't send it in because it is absolutely a wonderful freak lens and I'm afraid if it gets "fixed" I will lose the magic. Outside it's great, I just position accordingly, but in this small studio I was hoping to use a lens that would get me a little closer, the newer lenses just haven't given me the clarity, I need to try the 50mm but the 85mm was a great distance, it just wasn't sharp like my old lens. Sorry, I know this sounds crazy, please all, be generous with your patience. :)

Are you doing head shots or full length portraits? What camera are you using? full frame or crop sensor?
