Spent...

Looking for birds at a local refuge but only found geese so I focused on plant pods, cattails, etc...they are at the end of their season so I thought "spent".
If you pluck a few of those dry seed pods, you might be able to plant. Clear a soil area, scruffle the dirt, then sprinkle the seeds. Do not rake dirt over. When the freeze comes, the seed shells will crack so the seed germ can send out a hair root after the thaw and grow.

My husband thinks a garden is anything that is green...I am one step above that so I have to ask...what will grow!! :)

I especially like the last one, the milk weed pods. During WWII people collected the fluffy contents for use as filling in life jackets.

Thanks alliebess. My friend told me she collected the fluff to donate to the military so they could make parachutes.
Very good end of the season shots, wapusk!
