Wished I was going back.....
If you are going to be doing and seeing as much as you can, you will probably be busy going here & there and yonder. There is nothing wrong with that as your are traveling a long ways to get there. Maximize the trip....

In keeping with that thought, you will probably be in more of a "snapshot" mode (sounds so touristy). You will be trying to record everything so you can review at home.
Put your purse in the camera bag and hang bag on one shoulder and the camera on the other and you will be balanced for the whole day. Well, sorta balanced...

I vote for the the 18-55 and the 70-300. I think you will find the 18-55 a popular lens. Memory cards & batteries and charger.

Have a great time!!!!
Post lots of images!!

Ok, after all of that, tell us about the trip. How many islands? How many days on each island?
Are you renting a car?
Fromers or Fadors is a great travel book for the islands.

Take a P&S with you if you have one. You will likely be in spots (and boats) where there is a lot of salt spray, and you will want to have a camera over which you will not shed that many tears if you lose it or it is rendered useless.

One of my favorite all-time shots is of the Na Pali coast of Kauai, taken from an inflatable speedboat in 2008. I took it with a Fuji Finepix that is always with me, and I would not have dared taking my DSLR on that boat.

I'm going to Hawaii again this summer, and will take a couple of DSLRs but also a couple of P&Ss.

Can't speak to the equipment other than the P&S is a great idea.

Make sure you take lots of photos from the airplane window on approach and departure as that is a unique shooting platform. This would be a lot easier with the P&S vs a big, honking SLR.

My two cents,

Eric

If shooting between 8:00 and 5:00 you should have polorizer handy for any lens you shoot, especially if water or sky is in the shot.

There are some great and reasonable and small (one van) Photo Tours. Will get you oriented and take you to places that you might not otherwise find. I used the one on Kuai on second day of trip and returned to sites later like Nurses Beach.

I brought a lot of glass. But wide angle, telephoto zoom would work and a fast prime for indoor. I also brought a tripod and did a lot of HDR inside churches and of roadside stands.

Our last trip, 10 days in 2011, was Kaui.

Aloha Vicki,
Take lots of money. LOL. I'd go with Jay Pat's suggestion of the 18-55 and the 70-300, as well as the polarizer. Lived in Hawaii for almost 19 years and never got tired of the beauty.

If you are going to Honolulu you should take a very easy hike to
Manoa Falls. The short hike itself is beautiful and then the payoff is swimming in the pool at the base of the falls.
http://www.hawaiiweb.com/oahu/manoa-falls.html After that hike you are probably going to want some of the worlds best Shave Ice so you should head to the North Shore of Ohau and stop at Matsumoto Shave Ice store. http://www.matsumotoshaveice.com/ You will know when you get there by the number of cars parked. Absolutely the best shave ice you will ever taste. If you plan on doing any snorkeling then be sure to take along some of those disposable water proof cameras you will need them. The underwater wildlife there will blow your mind. I'm not sure if you are a scuba diver but if you are, the diving is wonderful. Just talking about Hawaii makes me want to go back. Lastly, I know you are going to take alot of pictures but don't get too caught up in getting that perfect shot. Take time to just soak in the atmosphere. You didn't mention where you were going and how long you were going to be there.

All of the advice is good. Take everything and especially money. I've been to Honolulu and Maui. The sunrise on top of Haleakala is said to be the 8th wonder of the world. It's cold up there and an hour or more drive to get to the park headquarters. This mountain is worth a day's worth in itself.
I wish I had more time to explore Maui. I'm posting a picture taken on the big island. Suggest you visit art.com and view all their Hawaii pictures and learn what's out there and what's already been done. Nothing is totally replicated though - that dimension of time. I really really enjoyed Hawaiian coffee. Also - popovers and muffins. Banana, mango, papaya flavors - great with their coffee. And pineapple like you have probably not experienced before. Enjoy.

Depending on where you are flying in from the time zone change will mess with your sleeping habits. We once flew into Maui and then because we woke up very very early we took blankets from the condo and headed up to Haleakala to watch the sunrise!. A spiritual experience!

I hope you weren't driving your rental car (illegally) on the Saddle Road. It's a great place to get a tremendous range of photos, from lava to tropical. As they keep improving the road, it will eventually be opened up to rental cars.

Taking a waterproof (to 33') P&S is a must. As for all the other stuff, how much time do you want to spend stopping to change lenses? Do you really want to carry all that equipment with you around the island? I would take a P&S, something for wide and something for tele. Regardless what you take, you will get good shots, but ruining your trip over camera equipment would be a mistake.

I couldn't agree with you more. My first trip to Italy I only took a Nikon Coolpix 7900 the pictures printed out very well at 11x14 AND, the camera fit in my shirt pocket!
