Anyone have a Nikon D7000?
I am considering upgrading from my D40X and wondered how the D7000 performs.
Most of my photography is portraits.
Is an upgrade worth doing?

I bought the D7000 6 months ago....a little intimidating at first, but I'm impressed with it now. A little heavy but very durable. I do a lot of landscape photography which includes hiking and climbing so the all metal body was important to me. I did have to upgrade my tripod and head because of the weight. All well worth it. I havent done any portraits yet, so I have no advice for you on that. But when I was trying to decide I posted the question here and saw some amazing portrait results from others. It's a great camera....can't go wrong.

As others are going to say, and I agree 100%, lenses are an area that make a big difference too. If you buy good glass, it will last through several body generations.

Your D40x came out about 5 years ago...an antique by todays standards. It's still capable of taking great pictures though. Several of us shoot with the D7000.
I recently got one and am giving it a pretty good ringing out.
It's almost as good as the full frame D700 as far a noise goes, the D700 is a touch sharper. Image quality is great.
Quite a bit better than the D300s I used to use.
Works with the Nikon CLS system if you ever get into multi- flash lighting. (All ttl exposure!)
And if this matters, it's also very quiet.

I'd say the improvement between the D40x & the D7000 are enough to warrant an upgrade. I love using the D7000 even though I have a D700 to use. For portraits, there is an advantage to using full frame though.

I have owned many Nikons over the years and the D7000 is the best one I ever had. Get prepared for a learning curve. It is a sophisticated piece of equipment. Well worth the effort.

DO IT!!!

I hope this comes across ok and not smug.....but as preface, I am in photography as a profession so we acquire a lot of cameras and usually add the newest pro cameras offered by Nikon. We have every pro Nikon camera offered in the digital world from D1's to the D3's and now the D4's one D800 and a D800i due in this month.

I bought the D7000 as a gift for my daughter. I took it out of the box and never gave it to her. It has become one of my favorite cameras. It goes everywhere I go. Is it better than a D700, D3s, D4, or D800?.....no! However, the D7000 manages low light extremely well with outstanding IQ. It is light weight (DX) with good video. A great buy...in my opinion (besides the D800) the best value, dollar for product, in the nikon line.

Go get it and have a photo ball!

Dabble,
I'm not sure if you've already purchased the D7000 but, if not, you might also want to consider the Nikon D5100. Here is why: if you are primarily going to use the camera for portrait work, you can save yourself quite a bit of money by getting the D5100....but the savings could go towards buying an additional high-quality lens which you might be missing out on if you get the much higher priced D7000 (and I say this because you never mentioned what kind of budget you have). Both cameras have the SAME highly-rated sensor as well as excellent color depth. In fact, dpreview.com, a website that many photographers here on UHH often refer others to when it comes to finding out about specific cameras, had this to say about the D5100: "Image quality is definitely the D5100's trump card. It offers effectively the same image quality as the higher-end D7000, at a lower cost."
So, the question comes down to if you really need all the "extras" that come with the D7000. Yes, it is one that you can grow with and you cannot go wrong at all in purchasing it. All I'm saying is that if you put the same high-quality lenses on each camera for your portait work, you would not notice any difference in image quality between it and the D5100. The immediate benefit to you is that you would be laying out less money on the D5100 but, as said before, you can then have more money to buy more lenses.
I am an advocate for the D5100 because I just recently made the step up in camera quality, going from very good "bridge" cameras to the more advanced and better DSLR cameras. Considering the budget I had, coupled with the idea of getting the best-reviewed camera I could find for my budget, after 2 solid months of daily research, I found that I simply couldn't go wrong in getting the D5100. Honestly, I dreamed of getting the D7000 but, for me, just getting that camera as a kit would have blown my whole budget. But since there is no difference in image quality between it and the D5100, I chose to get that one instead and bought myself another good lens. So take my experience for what it's worth.

The D7000 is the best camera I've had so far. It is the best camera for the $$ I've ever owned. The D300 was the best before that, and cost me about $500 more.

You'll be pleased with the D7000. Following is an excellent site to seek advice, shop talk, and help with settings, etc.
