Thanks Jay Pat. I'm always interested in anything steam.
Aside from perhaps one locomotive, the Grand Canyon RR is no linger powered by steam. They have now gone to rebuilt Amtrak diesel locos, but modified to burn a cleaner fuel.
Can the burner make a blue flame or just the cooler yellow-red flame?
Excellent article. Worth the time to read and study the photos.

I don't know if they can or not.
In all the cab rides with oil burners, the flame has been yellow.
The burner is mounted in the front of the firebox and is pointed towards the rear of the engine.
The flames blow towards the back of the firebox, turn upwards and can and probably do, turn forwards towards the flues/tubes.
Every fireman that I was around, watches the smokestack looking for no black smoke (indicates a clean burning).

Interesting, in some local ads from the gas company, they indicate that if the flame is not blue, it is not burning correctly. I guess gas an oil have different temperatures.
