I am really getting fed up with people who feel that I should supply my services and photos for free. I could be easily tempted to make up cards with a photo-related statement similar to this cartoon to hand out to people.

Think of it as free models and you'll feel better!

Love the card. Great thinking. FYI: I have learned to just say NO.

I ask them if they get paid for their work.

That's what happens when you sell your services directly to people. Before I retired I made a good living working for corporations. I donated my artistic talents for free.

Yeah. I'm a software developer, and I recall years ago that a fellow consultant was brought in to fix a serious software issue at a small corporation in NY. He traveled from out of state but was able to identify and fix the problem within 2 hours. The company decided nor to pay him for a full day as agreed since he was only there till mid morning. Their argument was that he quickly identified and fixed just two lines of code in a couple of hours and to pay for the full day was excessive. He argued, to no avail, that it wasn't just about changing two lines of code, it was about knowing which two lines to change. Fast forward a few months later, my friend was called again to fix a different problem that arose. This time, however, he doubled his rate to make up for the previous experience and demanded payment in advance. Its nice to occasionally feel empowered.

When I worked at the photo lab. There were people didn't like the prints I made so I reprint for them and then they asked to have the bad prints for free.

I simply destroyed all the prints they don't want to pay for.

I never plan on selling any of my photos but I sure do love the cartoon. Says it in a very professional way and could be used for any type of industry.

Thanks for the early humor, Greg

I saw a similar article online last night. It showed an email exchange between CBS and a professional photographer. CBS asked the photographer if they could use his image for free and just give him credit for it.

Naturally, the photographer said no, and he asked the executive if he worked for credit.

As a graphic designer I get that type of response often, finding the words to counteract those stupid comments is hard to do without offending the client, most are innocent in their ignorance but it doesn't make it any easier to take.
