Thank you for this article. I just started to hear this term last week. I am a chimper mainly because I am not all that secure with manual and I shoot events where the lighting changes.
I shoot in manual and RAW and yes, I look or chimp, at least the first few. Why not? And yes, pro's do this as well. Just is good insurance for that special shot!

I wish somebody would come up with a less insulting term. It only makes sense to check. We can, so why not? All through our film days there was that (for me anyway) nail-biting wait until the film was processed and we could be sure we got it. Now we can check on the spot. I'm not and never would suggest checking every shot, especially when shooting an event, but there's always a breather in every shoot when you can make a quick check. Honestly, I think that if you're a pro and you
don't check (maybe Check is the better term than Chimp, huh?) you're taking a huge risk. Cameras are mechanical, and anything mechanical can break. How could you ever explain to a client that you blew the job but didn't know because you
didn't check?
