This photo of Mt Hood (and the moon) was taken from Rocky Butte in Portland Oregon. While the purpose of this outing was to go prepare for the next evening when the Blood Moon eclipse would occur, this turned out to be one of my favorites of the weekend.
As a moon/mountain shot this is a success, helped by the colour gradations of the sky. However, even on download there is visible banding in the sky, and this sort of shot is crying out for a smooth sky. I suspect it would benefit from selecting the sky and applying generous amounts of smoothing.
I also like that the face on the moon is visible, looking slightly up and to the viewer's left. I like to think that he's either smiling or singing.

Thanks for the response. The banding in the sky is real and caused by the air that flows that way from the Portland metropolitan area. It is one of the reasons I did not return to this location the next evening for the eclipse. I will try working it with a gaussian type filter to smooth it out some.

Very nice juxtaposition of the moon and Mt. Hood. The colors are beautiful. I really like that you didn't highlight the summit; this lighting is more effective than what I might have tried.
I wondered of the banding was the result of pollution, though I thought perhaps Oregon didn't have so much. I think this is a really nice image.

It does help to add some color as the sun had just set behind me.
Most of the time, breezes and moisture (rain) cleanse the air pretty well, but it has been calm and dry recently. With Rocky Butte inside the city and Mt Hood being downwind, this is sometimes the result. I checked it out for the full moon at the end of July, and the mountain was almost invisible.
When the wet weather of winter arrives, the air will be much cleaner. Unfortunately, it comes with clouds and the mountain disappears completely. Then it is a matter of being ready for those days the clouds clear. Those times, with fresh snow, the mountain looks pretty nice. But then the sun sets before I get off work. :-(

When I post processed the photo, I increased clarity for the whole mountain. The snow patches and peak came out the way it is. The brightness (or lack thereof) must be related to the angle of the few patches of snow in relation to the brighter sky and the sunset in the west. After playing with it some and highlighting the peak a little bit, it might be better seeing the peak. I could go either way.

Lovely placement of all parts.
However, the moon has a fuzziness on the left side that I do not understand. And there is a definite black outline around most of the moon - except for that fuzzy area. Other than that it's a lovey photograph.
