An interview with greg vescuso,
1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I have been into photography for about 10 years. I got started when I was driving a truck around the country for a living.
2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I don't have any formal training. I have learned what little I know from here, creative live and the local camera club I belong to. The past 3 years I have been concentrating on people photography.
3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
I think what makes a good picture stand out is if it can draw the viewer in and hold their attention.
4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
I used a Canon 5dII with a Sigma 150-500 lens on a good tripod.
I was out on the back porch with a few of my children enjoying the show and would go over about every five minutes and recompose and take a shot and the kids kept looking thru the lens enjoying how cool the eclipse was as it was changing. I took all the shots at 500 mm starting at ISO 200 and adjusting my shutter speed to keep the aperture around f14 but as the moon got into full eclipse I had to bump the iso all the way up to 6400 to be able to keep the shutter speed above 1/15 of a second.
5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
There really isn't any image I don't do something to. I first bring my images into light room and adjust my white balance and then make what ever lighting adjustments are needed at this point I will hand the image off to Photoshop and do some spot healing, cloning or layer masking I may need to do. On this image after light room I brought each image into pp and used the marque tool using the oblong one and while holding the shift key to make a perfect circle I selected the moon out from the rest of the sky. Once I had all the different selections on their own layers I dragged them onto a new blank image with solid black background. To organize each one I drew horizontal lines equally spaced and just freehand adjusted for the vertical. I did have to rotate the images after the red moon ones because I had to move my tripod to get those shots and they were taking from a completely different angle.
6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
I don't really have anyone that i follow, I find inspiration in all the beautiful images I see and just want to create a image to represent the beauty of what I see when I'm there.
7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
What would I change if I shot this image again? I would have used live view with a 10 times mag. And manual focus.
8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
To be able to see light. I'm still working at it.
9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
Einstein strobe.
10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
35 mm 1.4. Because that is the view my eyes see.
11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
Einstein strobe with trigger and a couple ex600rt with gells.
12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Ride dirt bikes and hang out at the Orthopedic Hospital.
13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
Not yet..
14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
http://vescusophotography.wix.com/vescusophotography15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
Just get out and shoot. That is my biggest problem I don't get out and shoot enough.
