Anyone on the board who will be visiting Yosemite the week after next, specifically April 17 to 21st and would be interested in a Photo Meet Up, please send me a private message to make plans.

I will be driving from San Francisco on the 17th and should arrive there early that afternoon --- about 2pm. and will be staying until
the afternoon of Saturday the 21st.

Thank you!

I appreciate the comment and I thought it would be good to share ideas and technique to improve on composition and technical aspects of photography as well as having someone along for safety reasons.

As I will be going by myself this time, the possibility of getting injured on the trails and needing help summoned quickly could be an issue.

Enjoy and thank you for the invite. I have been going to Yosemite since I was a child back in the 50's. I have wonderful memories, and just a few pictures. So, shot, shot and hike, hike...
Can't wait to see your pictures.

Thank you.

I will have a good time there like always --- have been going there for over forty years. I used to do a lot of fly fishing and backpacking there when I was a lot younger. Now I'm going mostly for the chance to get away to the mountains and for the photo ops the park affords me.

Flyguy, When I saw the thread topic I had to check it out.
I will not be there but a guy named Michael Frye may. He has a web site "michaelfrye.com" and only lives an hour away. When at his web site check out his news letter and Blog,(top left side) I get them via e-mail.
He has a book (The Photographer's Guide to Yosemite) I picked up at the Ansel Adams Gallery in the park. I think near the visitors center. It is full of information, such as the month, dates, times, weather conditions, locations to shoot from and how to get the best shot in different conditions. A lot of Yosemite and photo info in only 130 pages and it only cost $10. One of the best books I have. He seems to enjoy sharing what he knows with others and ask people to come up and introduce themselves. This book and others are also available in electronic format at his web site. Check it out, If you like Yosemite I think you will like the site.
Enjoy the trip, Mike

Thanks for the heads up --- it will be of benefit to the many UHH members who are not aware of Michael and his blog or books.

I have used all of this for many years now and on this trip I will go through his book and some maps that I have as well as the current Yosemite Guide online PDF and make an itinerary.

I feel that I have been blessed on this trip, as I managed to secure the last reservation for the time I wanted at the Yosemite Lodge at the Falls and the long term weather forecast is very favorable --- warm and mild temps.

Also the California poppies are now in bloom too. Couldn't ask for more!

Flyguy, I also only live a few hours away and am now retired.
A once a year trip to Yosemite is a promise I have made to myself.

As you mentioned safety is always in the back of my mind for health and equipment even when I am out locally. Meeting up with other "Hogs" makes a lot of since in so many ways. I'll keep that in mind post before my next trip.

I made it to Yosemite last June when the Merced was at flood stage. Here are photos of the Yosemite Falls at a high flow rate that will help rev you up for your trip.

Wish I could be there, Mike

Hi Mike,

I was there on June 21-23 last year about a week or 10 days after the flood peaked, as you can see from these 8 images that I'm posting below there is still a lot of water in the meadow and it was still up and over the banks of the Merced River in places.

For a larger view of the pictures click on the download tab under each picture.

I have already posted some previously here on the board and the links to them are below.

Hi Mike,

Thank you very much --- there is great weather predicted for next week and the California poppies are in bloom, what more could one ask except for a shot of Wild Turkey at the end of a good day.

Fluguy, I was there last Tuesday and there was very few patches of snow. However... it has been snowing ever since then so be sure you take your chains. We were supposed to start running the trams at the Mariposa grove this weekend, it would have been the earliest start ever. Who knows when we'll start now.

I assume the photos with the reflection were not shot using a polarizer.
The sky is so blue, fantastic shots.

Thank you for you for your thoughtful comments, they are very much appreciated.

I shoot all my photos using RAW format and do my post processing in Lightroom and photoshop and these images were not shot with a polarizer. On many of my shots I will use the gradient tool to tweak and enhance the sky. I have thought about getting a neutral density filter, but I just haven't gotten around to it. On my next trip to the valley I'm planning on doing a lot of bracketing and making HDR images.

As you can see, if you've followed this thread all the way through, I am leaving in the morning for Yosemite and a few days shooting photos. The weather is going to be perfect --- sunny and mild, temps in the mid 60's to low 70's by Saturday and no more rain or snow until a week from today.
