Shoot the Sun, Wait for Moon

Just to see what would come out, I cranked the shutter up to 1/4000 and shot the setting sun while waiting for the moon to rise above a layer of haze that extended up about 10 - 15 degrees.

This one out of a series turned out to be my best shot of the day.

I love it, Neil!! There is an air of anticipation and excitement even if we have no idea what it is they're waiting for or looking at.

The flair of the flare adds to the energy of the image IMO. I tried a crop, some from bottom and some from left side, but think I prefer that the people remain smaller in the overall setting. There is a tiny bit of tree or rock on right hand edge (above the horizon line) that should be cloned out when you get a chance.

Below is a link to an interesting article that came in one of my e-newsletters, regarding silhouettes. "The reason silhouettes are so engaging is that they are very open to interpretation. No matter who or what your subject might be, the viewer of the photo has the opportunity to imagine what is unfolding in the scene."

Thank you Linda. That "tiny bit" must be another person, and I completely missed it. I tried various crops too, and settled for none. The silhouettes came as a bonus that makes the picture. The sun was so bright that I didn't notice anyone was in the viewfinder until I chimped the first shot.

Unusual. Very clean shot. Perhaps it is about what photographers do and see as well.

Thank you Jenny. I anticipated "unusual" when I tried the first shot, not knowing what would happen. The over-all golden cast was a surprise.

37, I like the composition and overall feel of this shot. I think it could be improved by painting on the sun and the orange coat.

The composition is good and the idea behind it very good but your camera settings have made it incredibly noisy. Too noisy in fact to do anything with. Without that noise and a little PP this would be fantasictical indeed. Im no expert snapper but at 4000th of a sec shutter speed with low light noise is gonna come rushing in big style.
Its a perfect subject for bracketing which gives you a chance to eliminate the digital noise and will hopefully kill that blown out sun and give it some colour.
The yellow sky looks too unreal but a Multiply blend mode layer at around 60% opacity calms it down
My eyes lit up when I first saw it cos its the perfect material for the base shot of a composite.
Kill the noise next time fella and make ol'Billy a present of a copy!!!!
Keep him happy in his playroom for hours.

Like I started this out with Billy, just thought I'd try it and see what comes out. I haven't touched it in PP. This is the JPG from the RAW that basic settings in Lightroom came out with. Just a question I have no idea the answer - at the uncut size of 19 x 14 at NVD how much noise is visible? The 11 x 8.5 print I made does not show any. So now you put the idea in mind to spend some time in PP and take out the noise for pixel-peepers.

Just for you, and any others who want to try it out, here is the JPG from the RAW with all Lightroom settings at "0", except "Sharpen". I'd love to see what you all can come up with.

Thank you Frank. Please expand on "painting on the sun and the orange coat" - I don't follow this.

To show the low haze present, this shows after the sun and people are out of way. SOOC except for straightening.

Very quickly done as an excuse for mediocre work 37. I am very much a rookie at pp. Just use a soft brush with low flow, sample the color from the image, and paint. Hope this helps.

Thank you Frank. That took the bite out of the sun very nicely. I'll have to get them side-by-side to tell the rest of the difference.

Just the sun and man's coat 37, maybe some contrast can't remember.
