Selling Used Lens

I am looking to sell one lens and purchase another more expensive one. There are no camera stores located near me, so I generally shop online. I have contacted Adorama about selling the lens and they will send a prepaid mailer to send it to them. Has anyone sold used equipment to either Adorama or B&H? If so, do you feel they paid a fair price for the equipment? I recognize they must make a profit on any used purchase, but I don't want to give a nice lens away either.

I have sold 4 cameras and 7 lens through Amazon.com's Seller account. You get to name your own price and they take a certain percentage. Then it's a matter of what the market will bear. I've been very happy selling my equipment that way and have had no problems. Amazon has worldwide reach, so a LOT of people will see your offering.

With details re the lens and a couple of current photos of it, you can list it right here in the "Members - Buy/Sell/Trade - Classifieds" and, if you find a buyer, you can work out any details using the "Private Message" option at the top of this page. There are no fees charged here for sales. Have sold two items with ease and am about to list a third.

I've sold lenses to keh.com. without a problem. You can get an online quote from them.

Selling to any of those companies is going to get you wholesale for your equipment not used prices. So unless you want to sell it for chump change, sell your lens yourself.

I sold several lenses to one of the used camera resellers. They take a pretty big cut. I did it because I didn't want to deal with selling 5 lenses at one time, and because they were visiting my local camera store and I got a 10% extra credit for using the proceeds (which I did, plus some).

You are paying a premium for the convenience; selling a single lens on Amazon, eBay, or craigslist is not much hassle and will get you a lot more money. If you live in a metropolitan area, craigslist is great if you are selling a popular item. I've sold a number of cameras and lenses and other equipment; usually on eBay, and generally without issue.

Though satisfied with Adorama in every way otherwise, I filled out the form, packed and sent them some pretty good stuff -- their offer was so low I had them send it back. When I took the trouble to sell some things myself, I got almost as much for one item as they offered for all of it. Just my experience.

If a lens is in excellent condition, they will usually sell if for about 60% - 70% of the current retail price. They have to make a profit so they will offer you about half of that, or 30 - 35% of the current retail. You can usually sell yourself it for almost what they would sell it for.

I've sold photo gear through the camera club and photography meetup groups that I'm a member of. At my camera club meetings there are always tables set up. People bring stuff to sell and put a card with their name and the price next to the item. I did a search online and found a camera club in your area. Joining a camera club is fun and educational and you can sell photo gear. Here is the link to the camera club in your area.

I once sent in a detailed description of all my cameras and lenses, right down to serial numbers, with pictures (this in the day of snail mail is king) to one of the biggie New York stores. Answer was my stuff was way too old; they suggested donating to some camera museum and take a tax deduction. I still have that stuff, should I ever need a boat anchor.

Well, if it's any good you could use UHH for sale forum; someone might have the right boat.

I, too, have sold a couple of items on the Hog's Classified section with no problems and did get my asking price each time. I would urge you to try that first, before using one of the big camera outlets.

Try again. They might be collectible by now.

CO offers another good suggestion above.
