Hi fellow hoggers, I am thinking about updating my laptop from Window 7 professional to the free version of Windows 10 (already downloaded onto a usb stick).
Sometime back I changed the HDD in the laptop to a 480Gb SSD, this I partitioned into two sections, a 120Gb partition for the OS and progs, and the remaining 360Gb partition for data, I know its better to have a SEPARATE drive for data, but my laptop does not have the facility for a second drive (I don't think any do ??)
Anyway the question is, if and when I install Windows 10, it will presumably overwrite Windows 7, (no problem as I have the original 7 disc) BUT, will the installation reconfigure my partitions with or without my knowledge or being able to do anything about it, and if so will I lose all the data on the 360Gb partition ??, many thanks for any replies ;)
You can decide what files and partitions you want to keep or you can do a clean install.
In any case your old OS will not be overwritten and can be accessed if ever you want to return to your previous OS, you will find in "C" drive under properties and is labelled "Windows Old".
This does take up space on your HDD so it can be deleted if you want.
many thanks John, I'll try and give it a go later, what ever I'll keep UHH informed
I've seen in more than one place that you can revert to Win7 within a month of the Win10 upgrade. You might want to research that further before making the jump.
There are laptops out there that have two physical HDs on
them, I have a Gateway that carries two HDs and it works
great. There are other brands too that will have dual HD bays.

My Toshiba laptop's hard drive came with two partitions, regular C: drive and a D: recovery partition. When I upgraded to Win 10, only the C: drive was affected. You should have no problems.
I like Win10. I liked Win7 too. The upgrade is painless. If you were familiar with 7 or 8, you'll easily adapt to 10.
I upgraded Win 7 Pro to Win 10 Pro, but when booting I get the option of reverting to Win 7 but only Win 7 home edition.
Best advice I've received..and this from several credible and respected tech websites....WAIT! WAIT! until several upgrades to Win 10 have made Win 10 more stable. I'm waiting until later in the year after all the bad coding mistakes are corrected by several upgrades.

It seems to me that if your computer has a USB port you could run an external drive.

This is not necessarily so. If your Optical Disk has a SATA interface (as your primary interface is), then you can get a replacement unit which holds a hard drive and slide it into the slot where the CD/DVD player fits. If you take out the one screw that holds the optical caddy in place, you can warm boot these changes, AND have two physical hard drives.
The Caddy that allows you to put a hard drive in place of the optical disk is about $10 and will be discovered when slid into the slot as a second hard drive, but it will be running on the internal interface.
I have two laptops, running two hard drives each. Can interchangeably change the boot order on startup.
I don't miss the optical disk as CDs and DVDs have become too risky for archival usage. You are pushing the risk of loss by archiving on any grade of optical disk. :!: :!:

That's true and Toshiba made a lot of laptops with dual HD's internally.
But note my previous post on using a replacement caddy to put A second HD where your Optical Disk lives, on the internal interface... NOT AS AN EXTERNAL, if your optical disk interface is SATA like your C:\ drive interface.
