I'm interested in creating my own website to show and eventually market my work. However I have no experience in building websites. I do have access to Adobe Creative Suite 3 but lack the knowledge to use it. I want a site that will stand out and look professional (if I can afford it.)

Any suggestions?

hello you can use webs.com they have templates ready to use for photography that you can change around and adjust to what you would like. Very cheap to I am in the process of using them for a site. Using it for a Youth Ministry site. Good luck.

Thanks for the tip! I'll check it out. Also thanks for your work with youth. There is no greater calling.

How does smugmug compare to shutterfly for a website? I was thinking about shutterfly but not familar with smugmug.

You can easily create your own website by using Weebly.

It's fairly simple, with no knowledge of web design needed. You pick a template and then fill it in with words and images.

It's free!

http://www.weebly.com/

You can start off by using the free web address they provide. When you want, you can purchase a domain name from Weebly, or buy a domain name from any registration company you want for about $10 a year. (1and1.com is a good one.)

And remember, Weebly is free ... no monthly hosting fee.

Bob--at first I took offense (kidding of course) to your SmugMug (Macy's) vs Shutterfly (K-Mart) analogy. I clicked on your link (www.smugmug.com) and WOW---what a difference and ability to do things and customize. Curious Bob, do you use the Pro or just the basic?

Guess I need to just learn to trust what you say Bob!! lol

Here's one of my websites on the Weebly platform:

http://www.brainattackart.com/index.html

If you don't feel confident in creating your own, just pay someone to do the design work, but host it on Weebly to save the monthly hosting cost.

I use the basic as I no longer sell my work. The one feature that has tempted me to go with the Pro feature is the ability to upload and store RAW format files.

As far as trusting old Bob don't. Get a second & third opinion. The easiest way to verify what I said is to go to a pro-level photographic forum like http://www.shutterfreaks.com/Forum and check out what online services they use. I've been with SmugMug for 5 years.

If you want a very customized site and are willing to make a capital investment, you can submit the project to guru.com to get quotes for companies to build it. It's important to be VERY specific in your requirements because changes in scope will definitely increase the cost. On the low end with very simple functionality, it will probably be around $500. On the upper end (shopping cart, slideshows, password-protected galleries, etc.), it may be around $2500.

I have been using SmugMug for about 2 years, and customized it myself. They are a great organization to work with, since they are updating their services all the time. They have 3 levels of services they offer. So you can start out at low one and progress to the higher one when you are ready. You can take look at the one I have by clicking on this link. http://www.dubinphotography.net/ If I can answer any questions about it, please let me know.

I would recomend Weebly.com. I am in the process of setting up my own site and it was my daughter who recommended Weebly. You can set up a website absolutely free or as I did pay $39 to get your own site name. A free site would read as yoursite @weebly.com, whereas as my for $39 would read frankscreations.com. My daughter praised their customer service as she was a novice as you & I in setting up a website. She said the people could not have been nicer or more helpful. Thats saying a lot considering the state of IT support these days. Best Of Luck.
