Articulated Screen

There was a discussion about this a while back, so I am adding another tidbit. Canon did not put the articulated screen on it's 5D Mark III because of weatherproofing concerns. Makes sense.

My D5000 has that type of screen, and it comes in handy.

That's the reason I picked the D5000, instead of the Canon my dad wanted me to get.

Plus, for a klutz like me, being able to protect the screen by folding it in against the back of the camera is a big bonus.

That is a great feature - better than a thin sheet of plastic - which I also use. For a lot of my shooting, I don't even bother turning the screen around.

Interesting though is the fact that Olympus has announced weather sealed OM-D E-M5 with articulating screen. Will have to see how it behaves.

I'm hoping the Nikon D7100 will have one. Then it will be my next camera.

I bought the D5100 in part because it has one. I have been pleasently surprised on how much I use it. I think now I'd be frustrated with a camera without one.

The two places I use it most are when I attach the camera to my telescope and when I take pictures from a low angle; i.e. with the camera near the ground. It saves me from having to crawl on my belly like a reptile, as they say. It's also been useful in other "reach" situations; e.g. around an obstacle. I don't go places with crowds but I know holding the camera up above the heads in front of you is another good use of it.

I bought a plastic cover for it and leave it on. It gets messy and is a little scratched but I don't have to turn the screen every time I put it away. I use the screen a lot to change camera settings and sometimes to manually focus. Not so much to view the image...I keep auto show turned off.

I was hoping the same thing, but I think we will both have to satisfied with the D5000/5100. Canon said that they kept their immovable screen because of weatherproofing issues. Since the D7000 is also weatherproofed, I think the articulating screen will not make an appearance on the D7100.

Yes, I suspect you are right.

I would like the weather proofing but the other features (dual cards and batteries and body focusing motor) the D7000 has over the D5100 do not outweigh the articulated screen. I have no use for those features...the battery on my D5100 is awesome, you can now use up to 64 Gig cards (I have 32), and all my lenses (including those on my wish list) have their own motors.

Since the D5100 has the same sensor as the D7000 and costs about half as much I believe it is the best camera deal out there.

Sounds like you have it all figured out. Not having the motor in the lens can be a minor drawback, but I often like to focus manually.

They put it on my sx20is & I just love it. Keeps the screen from getting scratched. Anyway, who in his right mind would leave a camera in the rain? Wish I had it on my T2i.

I've got the Nikon D5100 and one reason I chose it was for the articulated LCD screen. I would not, however, have it on a camera I was working for a living with everyday...too fragile.
Handy, but fragile.

On further thought I'm not buying the weatherproofing argument for not having the articulated screen. The lens attachment rotates, has contacts, and is weather sealed. The lenses themselves have rotating parts that seal. O-rings work pretty good for such applications.

The point about ruggedness may be more correct. The articulated screen adds a failure mode suseptable to rough handling.

On the other hand it adds a benefit when the screen is folded in. Alas mine doesn't do that any more because I keep a plastic shield on it.

BTW I forgot to mention one other big benefit of the articulated screen I have used from time to time. You can line up and take pictures of yourself (and a friend if you wish) whilst looking at the screen with the camera on a tripod. I use the little $15 remote...which on the D5100 can be triggered from front or rear. It's great for travel pics.

As I mentioned in an earlier the Olympus OM-D E-M5 is advertised as splash proof- waterproof and it has an articulating screen.
