I'm still in search of my "perfect" moon shot. I've
got many miles to go, but oh, what fun!

Nice framing. The moon is such an elusive subject what with special apeture, shutter and ISO eh ?
Sarge
I'm getting in late on the discussion but what camera, lens, aperture, speed and ISO?
Hi Burton -- First the snide remark -- Is that a stick figure poised to drop from the tree onto the moon? Second, it's really a lovely picture! I'm warming up to the moon, some mornings when it rises just before sunrise I go chasing it around town trying to get it in the same frame as the sun. Another time I like is when it sets in the early morning with the dawn lighting it up slightly. I don't have anything I'm ready to show yet, but I have big plans. I just have a standard 18-55 mm lens, but hope to expand soon. Good job -- keep shooting and sharing!

What were your settings?
Oops!! When I edited this post, I obviously deleted part of the original post. Here goes:
The photo is a composite of two photos. To get the branches AND the moon in focus (not too good on the branches) I first focused on moon, then in the second photo (about two seconds later while keeping the same exposure) I focused on the branches. In Photoshop, I copied the in-focus moon and pasted it over the out-of-focus moon.
If my memory serves me correctly, these were shot in "shutter priority" at 1/400 sec. with an ISO of 1600. The lens was a Canon 18-55 at 55mm. The exposure was achieved by spot-metering the moon with no exposure compensation.
Isn't this moon stuff fun? The shots all vary from night to night. Tomorrow night could produce the perfect one.
You don't think so?

As for the stick figure, I was hoping NASA might pay attantion to my short cut to get him there. :-D
I haven't tried photographing the moon in the dawn light but I would imagine the results could be very different. Don't hold out on us much longer; we want to see your photos.
The 55mm lens IS a little short for showing details of the moon, but it works well when photographing the moon with other objects.

I did something similar, photographed the moon then next morning the palm tree and used Fotomix (free software) to combine..
Full moon

Nice shots. It's almost impossible to get both in focus at the same time and still get the effect that you want. It would be pretty simple with a wide-angle lens, but the moon would be
a white dot.

Hi Burton, thanks for your encouragement glad youre willing to work with NASA they need all the help they can get these days -- Im far from where I want to be, but I snapped this pic this morning at 5:39 just as the sky was lightening forgot to straighten the chimney, but, in fact, its probably not plumb anyway most of this 1800s house is not. I took the snap from my deck steadied only by leaning on the door jamb and holding my breath. (f/4.2, ½ sec, ISO 1,000) I fear stepping out in the dark on the uneven ground and falling on my major source of entertainment these days keep the moon shots coming!

I really like the composition AND the way the moon illuminates the surrounding clouds. GOOD SHOT!
Maybe we'll both make it!
