A local camera shop quoted a price of 65 dollars to clean my camera sensor. Worth it? Fair price?

Fair price in China? All the shops in Portland, OR, charge about $50. It's just a ten minute job but there's liability involved when they mess with the sensor.

It's worth it if you only need occasional cleaning (every year or two). If you shoot in nasty conditions and need frequent cleanings, then you're better off to spend the money on cleaning supplies and watch some YouTube videos on how to do it yourself.

I charge $25 for a crop sensor and $35 for a full frame wet cleanings here, no charge for a dust-off job. $65 is just way too much for 10 minutes work no matter who they are.

Aside from the price issue, why do you think you need a sensor cleaning? Are you seeing issues with your images or did someone just tell you that you need to get it cleaned? If you are not seeing problems with your images then I would leave it alone.

I do my own. For that $65 you could get a good kit with a magnifying loupe to help you see what you're doing. To know if you need a cleaning, take a picture of a white sheet of paper or a clear blue sky at a high F stop like F22. If you have Lightroom, they have a great Spot Visualizer view in the Spot Removal tool in the Develop module to help you see if you have any sensor dust. Good luck.

$65 is high but not outrageous if they know what they are doing and do the job right.
On the other hand....$65 will buy the supplies you need to do it yourself 100 times.
If you do a search on "camera sensor cleaning" you'll find plenty of videos that will show you how easy it is to do yourself.

It's cheaper for me to change the oil in my car but I don't.

I would email or call MT SHOOTER and ask him about learning to do it your self and get the supplies from him! Right guy with the right stuff!

Almost double that at my nearest camera store + $30 in gas (I live in the boonies) + no camera for 1 to 2 weeks. It would be worth my while to take a short holiday to the States and get it done there.

If so, not by much. Figure $4 per quart, (5 quarts regular oil), plus $5 for filter and you just spent $25.00. Many quick lube places charge $20 to $30.

BTW: I let the shop do it also.

Where would you go closest to Goderich for a sensor cleaning? I was thinking of taking mine to BJ Camera in Waterloo, though I haven't called as of yet for a price.

That's about what a shop in Austin charges. If I did not have benign tremors in my hands I would do the cleaning myself. Have only had my camera cleaned once as a particle on the sensor would not come off using my Rocket Air blower.
