I do not think that can be done. When converted to jpeg the information was lost. You would have to saved in raw, then kept the original in raw and converted a copy to jpeg.

You can convert it to DNG, but you won't gain anything by it as mentioned before, the pertinent info for adjusting has already been discarded.

well mt shooter is right, you won't "gain" (pixels) by converting to dng. but you will save losing loss pixels if you keep it .jpeg and keep editing and 're-saving' it. by converting to tiff or dng you can edit without lost pixels, as long as you don't crop, obviously.

Older versions of Adobe's converter may have been able to convert JPEG to DNG but the latest version converts only RAW to DNG.

The only way I know to do that conversion is to use Lightroom. In Lightroom choose Export....In the Export Dialog under File Settings, choose DNG.

You cannot use Copy as DNG under Import, you must import as a JPEG and then use Export.

CaptureNX2 - when you modify a JPEG and then use the "Save As" the program automatically sets to save as a NEF file - Nikon's RAW. What happens is that the JPEG is saved exactly as it was loaded with a data file of the edits made. When you load again you get the modified image with the edit list which can then be changed. In other words, the program treats the JPEG as if it were a RAW file. Hope I said this right

If you have Photoshop Elements 10 go to the Editor and use "OPEN AS" and set the type to RAW.

You won't get all the white balance choices but everything else will work as it opens in ACR.

Pam,
My coolpix 950 gives me jpg format pictures unless I ask for a more/higher quality format. The higher quality in my case is TIF. I have found that saving my jpg pictures in the TIF format before post-processing(PP) is important because I'll make quite a few minor PP modifications to some pictures, saving after each alteration and then working on the newly saved/altered picture.

In jpg format the compression algorithm activates on each saving, so the pictures quality can be degraded extremely by the time I've gotten it to where I want it.

In TIF format there is no compression, all I have to do is make alterations and then compare them with the original or the last PP picture to make sure that I haven't made unexpected alterations. When I get what I want from the PP, then and only then do I save the TIF picture as a Hi-lvl jpg picture. In all cases I'll have the original picture and the final Hi-lvl jpg upon PP completion. In some cases I'll even keep the final TIF if I see a possible future alteration.

I don't know if you wanted to change JPG to RAW for editting, but I do know that JPG to RAW would not improve the picture and neither would JPG to TIF. The JPG to TIF that I have been talking about here is my way to decrease compression degredation in my editting.

You are going backwards on this. A raw file is all the information that it is seen by the camera when the photo is first taken. A Jpeg is the file that has gone thru a program to optimize it for what the author of the program believes it needs to make it the best possible photo for viewing. In the process it ends becomes smaller and all the original data is lost from the raw file in the Jpeg. In most cases the raw file is still kept in the computer with a different suffix attachment and you may still have it if you had downloaded it as a raw file on your computer.

What you are asking cannot be done. RAW can be converted to JPG, but not the other way around.

I think however the better question is What Are You Trying To Do?

Go to bridge, select the picture and click on open in RAW.

All the other stuff is still true but save it as a raw file after you work with it and save your jpg.
It is also true that EVERY TIME you save a JPG it saves it a littlle different and you loose a little bit of the picture.
