After a year of agonizing over weather or not I should upgrade to Yosemite I finally did it. No problems at all and all of my photos migrated perfectly. I am just a hobby photographer and for post processing I used Aperture and the NIK suite. Well I knew that Aperture was at end of life but I did not know that it would no longer open in Yosemite. I also can't get the NIK Suite to open either. So since all I got left is "photos" I decided to give it a try.........And guess what? Nice....real nice, very easy and intuitive to use. The editing features are not bad either. If I need to do more, about a year ago I installed Macphun Snap Heal Pro and Intensify Pro; which by the way are amazingly fantastic products. They remained operational through the upgrade like nothing ever happened. NIK has not been great with customer support since Google got them and Lightroom which seems to be the standard would be a new purchase for me so I'm asking myself "what more do I really need" at my level. I just wanted to report to all of you fellow UHHers that I'm finding the simplicity enjoyable and I might just keep operating this way for a while. And once again my hat is off to Macphun for having a product that didn't quit on a OS upgrade. Just wondering what others who have moved to Yosemite think about photos and any other comments you may have. Thanks in advance.

I have been on Yosemite since the day after it became available ;)

I too made use of Aperture, but my Aperture still runs in Yosemite - there was a later version of Aperture that would run under Yosemite - Of course, it may not run under El Capitan anyway, so probably not worth worrying about.

I switched from Aperture to Lightroom, I have gotten very comfortable with Lightroom soon after Apple announced no more support for Aperture and saw little use for iPhotos an Photos for me. I have both iPhotos and Photos on my Mac, but I am a Lightroom & Photoshop CC user.

I made use of Topaz plugins for Aperture they worked fine transferring to Lightroom and function fine today under Yosemite.

Thanks for your reply Don. I guess I missed the last upgrade for Aperture that would have allowed it to work. The App Store said no longer available in U.S. Right now I have a lot going on in my life to try and learn new software so like I said I like the simplicity. When I retire in a few years that's when I'll learn have time for a learning curve for PP software.

I too have been on Yosemite since day one with a few issues but mostly ok. I use Lightroom, Photoshop, nik, on1, macphun suites and a few stray topaz filters. Had no trouble migrating them to Yosemite though some had to have reinstalls to update them to the new system. Nik is what I rely on most as a plugin suite but there are things I prefer the others for. I do nothing with Apple Photos. I bypass it and take everything straight into LR. Letting an image into Photos creates more work for me. But everyone has to find a workflow and the pp tools that suit them, so whatever works for you, go for it!

Maybe things will change in El Capitan too. Apple folk have told me that Apple had a team from Adobe working with them on El Capitan to build better integration. Sounded promising.

Thanks for your reply. I figured most people would feel the same as you. For some reason the native photo editors in the iOS line were not regarded as relevant for most users. Like I said I don't do much editing, for years I was happy with Picasa. I wish I could try LR without getting into the whole cloud purchase thing. I just don't want to buy more software that sits on my machine and never gets used cause I don't have the time to work with it. El Capitan is not far off so I'm going to wait to see what it brings.

You can still buy LR as a standalone. FWIW.

You are always able to download a 30 day free trial of Lightroom to try - before deciding to buy or join the Creative Cloud.

That is how I initially got started.

BUT there is a learning curve that will take a bit longer than 30 days to master. Watching online videos, reading blogs or picking up a book or two to go with it will help.

I commented sometime ago that Photos was thinking only about the iOS photo users since that is such a large portion of their market. Your experience bears that out. Photos appears to be great if all you ever do is grab an iOS image, clean it up and post it to Facebook or other social site. The main issue with me is that Apple made me and other users second class users by requiring all the extra steps to go to PP edit. I have been an Apple fan since 11/1984 and feel really left out by their Photos action.

I am not a Pro and, I use Apple Photos and find that PP in the EDIT program to be substantially effective for most PP. Are you activating the "down arrows" in the edit menu? The down arrows activate more Edit parameters. Try an Apple "one on one" session with Apple for a comprehensive tutorial on Photos.

Try this site:

https://support.apple.com/downloads/Aperture

Or this one

https://www.apple.com/support/osx/software-updates/

If it's not there, poke around, try contacting Apple via a chat or email. Try the Apple discussion site. Aperture still runs under Yosemite, I'd guess the software patch is still available you just need to find the link.
