I've been noticing in the UHH classifieds that mostly Canon equipment is for sale. Are people upgrading to newer or switching sides?

I'm NOT trying to start a flame war. Please no angry retorts.

Funny you should say that. Until a few days ago I thought it was mostly Nikon gear that was for sale.

As of 2015, Canon had a 44.5% share of worldwide DSLR sales, compared to Nikon's 29.8% share. I'm not trying to infer that Canon is better, only that it sells better. Canon is selling 1.5 times more DSLR cameras than Nikon. For that reason, alone, you will see more Canon equipment for sale in the UHH classifieds.

You may be able to compare a specific Canon camera or lens to a specific Nikon camera or lens, but you can't objectively compare the quality of their total lines to one another and come up with a realistic answer. Which company is better is totally subjective. Even comparing specific products from the two companies can be subjective, depending upon your individual needs and likes. They are both great companies, and they both make great products.

If you are buying, compare the two products and make a decision based on how the products fit your needs and usage. Then, as the carnival barkers say, "You pays your money and you takes your chances".

Photo gear is no different than any other product - users tend to keep what they are satisfied with.

I've used several brands of cameras; Mamiya, Pentax, Linhof, Canon, Nikon.

For years I shot Canons, both rangefinder (Yeah some of you young folk may have to look that up. LOL) and SLRs.

When I started my Masters studies at a small school, the school hired me to be the staff photographer. They had Nikons and my boss liked Nikons (His main job was at CBS Sports.) So I got to use their Nikons even off-campus to shoot weddings. I have never gone back to Canon, though I did buy a Mamiyaflex and a Linhof 4x5 for personal use.

I just hope both companies get off the dime and build some worthy mirrorless. I'm not a fan of Sony, but they are the only quality game in town. Whichever of the two comes out with an APS-c or FF mirrorless will get my next camera money.

It comes in cycles. As already noted, it would seem Nikon was the more popular for-sale ...

Read the specs and watch the reviews, Jethro. The M3 is not the Canon folks have been waiting for.

Nobody wants to buy Nikon so the Nikon shooters have given up trying to sell it? You can find it all on e-bay. Just search for "useless stuff made into knick-knacks"! :-D
Just kidding! What's for sale here on UHH is probably more a matter of when you look then the brand. I've noticed at times a lot of Nikon and at other times a lot of Canon.

It is just like going to the car/truck store. There will be times there are Beaucoup cars and other times trucks. It just depends on when something is replaced. I have even seen times there were lots of Sony stuff for sale.

Try keeping a tally for a few months or so to get an average. Also keep in mind that when some people sell all of their equipment, they list each item separately , which can mean 10 ads of the same brand listed at one time.

The comments made about it being impossible to judge Nikon and Canon value and market share are valid and correct. I'm sure that some days you'll see more Nikon gear than Canon., It depends on what is happening.

When a new camera body or a new lens is announced there is often a flurry of ads to sell the old stuff in favour of the new stuff instead. I think if you pay attention to current trends and announcements you'll find an explanation of why one maker is featured more than another at any given time.

But I'd also like to offer another thought. Going through the Auto Trader it's also not reasonable to determine market share and overall quality by counting the number of ads for specific brands and models. And that's for the same reasons too. However, what is interesting is that some quite expensive vehicles are selling remarkably cheap, completely out of proportion to their initial price and some little puddle jumpers are selling for what seems to be priced unreasonably high.

What you can get from the ads is the extent to which vehicles hold their value as they age. Generally the high quality vehicles fetch higher resale prices that lower quality vehicles. It doesn't tell you what is higher quality, even the best cars do have issues too, but it at least is clear that if you go for one of those higher priced vehicles the odds are that you'll be a lot happier than acquiring a junker.

Just be clear too that this comparison does not illustrate the overall quality of a car maker, it only shows the quality of individual models of vehicles.

You might also sense a trend in that some makers have vehicles that tend to keep their value or, for that matter, never show up on the ads because they're so good no one ever sells them. However resist the urge to judge the makers, mostly they are pretty much the same.

I don't know if this applies to the ads here but I would not be surprised if it does. Something to think about.

I think it has to do with new models, when Canon comes out with a new model, many put their old ones up for sale in order to move up. Same with Nikon, or any other brand. It seldom has anything to do with switching.
