Exif Data

I recently saw a post where another photographer had their photo stolen but they were able to prove it was their photo because of the exif data on the photo. I recently purchased a used camera and i would like some hints as to how i can change ownership so that the data shows that the image is mine and that the pervious owner can't claim my photo as their own because of the exif data. The camera is a nikon d200.
Thanks in advance.

The first thing to do is download a PDF format User Manual from Nikon, either from this page:

http://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/products/10/D200.html

or directly from this URL:

http://download3.nikonimglib.com/archive2/wA0rL00RpGgd01x3Hi344FzbGJ59/D200_NT(En)05.pdf

Another bit of software that is nice, though not absolutely necessary, is to install Phil Harvey's Exiftool package.

http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/

The Nikon D200 is of course an "old" camera now, and it did not have a built in facility to add any variety of text to the Exif data. The one entry it does have is a "Comment", which of course can be a copyright statement (or something else). See page 118 of the User Manual for how to set it, and also how to turn it off or on.

And that is where Exiftool becomes very handy. And note that several image editing programs have at least some kind of ability to do this type of edit. While the D200 itself will not add anything to the Exif tag for "Copyright", "Artist", "User Comment" or a number of others, Exiftool will do any of them, and other programs will do some of them.

Just for grins, I "searched" the word EXIF, and found scores of UHH threads on the subject. No time (nor inclination) to determine which ones were relevant.
