I have my photos and LR catalog on the c drive. I want to install a new boot drive so that the old drive becomes d. The catalog and photos exceed the size of the new drive. How can I redirect the catalog and photos from the old c drive to the new d drive?

Thanks.

The catalog can be moved with just a file copy - then open it with Lightroom in it's new location and Lightroom will remember where it is.

The images, easily moved within Lightroom by dragging and dropping... just create a new top level folder on your new drive in the library module of Lightroom by clicking the + icon in the folders panel.

Once created you can drag folders from the folder panel to the new drive/folder.

Everything remains updated in the catalog and Lightroom will find all your images.

You can also move files outside of Lightroom, but then you will need to reconnect all your folders again because Lightroom will not know where they went.

Don, thanks for the detailed and clear explanation. However, my situation is different. The new location is the old c drive but relabeled to be d. The catalog and pictures are not moving, the drive is.

I can read the catalog on d but the photos will have paths on the old c drive. I guess the photos will show up as missing so I can find them and everything will be fine. With hundreds of folders, that will be long and tedious. I wonder if a global solution exists.

The new drive is a 250 G solid state drive that will have the operating system and programs taking up about 125 G. The pictures on the old drive are about 250 G.

Don, thanks for the detailed and clear explanation... (show quote)

Actually, Lightroom will find them pretty quick, right click on the folders with the missing indicator and you can tell it to find the folder by pointing to where the new path is - it does happen fairly quickly.

As a test I renamed a folder in Finder, then launched Lightroom which showed the ? in the folder name, right clicked and found 534 files in a few seconds. The files were also in sub folders under the missing folder.

In the library module could you select the drive and a menu pops up to among other things to rename.
