Would it be best to buy the 580 EX speedlite or the macro ring lite? I am trying to learn macro but I do not want a light that I only can use for macro.
I have a Canon T2i

Then, add a ring flash adapter to fit the 580EX. Not very expensive.
On UHH, create a post inquiry for "Ring Flash Adapter". Should get get several responses.
Search internet. There are examples of regular flash and then ring flash adapter comparisons for portraits.
Macro, portraits, anything, you've got it covered. Well, almost anything.....
It's on my shopping list.

I would go with the 580EX II and then add a macro adapter.

The 430EX is nice but the 580EX II has many more features. I think the 430EX allows the flash head to go 0 to 90 degrees up. The 580EX II allows this plus it lets you go 7 degrees down from the 0 degree point.

The next generation flash is out. Talked to a guy that has it and he said it is a very nice upgrade. I thought about the ring flash but kept reading that it gives a dull, flat light.

I use the 580EXII with a Gary Fong light sphere attached and it works well for macro and portraiture. I would recommend purchasing a cord to let you attach the flash to the camera and hold the flash in your hand. This allow you to get the flash off camera for more options.

Blind,
The 580 is far more versatile and is in my opinion well worth the price. I have two of them. Have a Very Happy Easter.

Thanks everyone......I will go with the 580 EX. Now, another question, I need a remote cord so what should I buy? I am so dumb on all of these things.

Go to Amazon.com and type remote cable for 580EX flash and see what comes up.

I have used the cheap cords and have had no problems with them.

I disassembled the socket part for the flash on the cord and put glue in the screw holes and glue around the edge of the two halves. I did this after reading that several people had the socket part break under the weight of the flash. This would not be necessary if you are using the cord and holding the flash in your hand.

These cords, even the OEM Canon cords, are very delicate and don't last forever. Amazon is a good place to look for them.
