Canadian Rockies Trip: Athabasca Falls

On our first visit to Athabasca Falls, the sun was out and there were huge crowds, so we went back very early next morning when we were the only people there. The clouds were a bit dark and heavy, but it was so nice to have freedom of movement.

You should have learned a lesson from that experience: The best light is not always bright sunlight. The "golden hours" are just after sunrise and just before sunset. Another "truth" you should have learned: The crowd is not always right.

Very nice, I like the next to last the best. All are very nice, the simplicity of the last is nice as well.
Ok, you just added more! The new last I like too!

All are very nice. Thanks for sharing! But I personally like no's 1, 2, 4, 6, & 8 the best. With #8 being my favorite. (I think...you make it very difficult.) ;-)

It would also be very interesting to see no's. 3, 5, 6, 7, & 8 as black & whites... ?

I'm sure you meant that in a helpful way, and not condescendingly, but if you were following the whole trip you would have known that I am very conscious of choosing soft light for waterfalls and avoiding crowds. (Example, the post on Tangle Falls.) We just happened to be at Athabasca one afternoon on our way elsewhere and decided to get the lay of the land, so to speak. The difficulty of expansive trips like this one is the logistics of getting from one place to another under optimal conditions.

I love these falls butas you found out, they can be hard to photograph without hoards of people everywhere.
You did well. Lovely shots. Did you walk down the old channel to the river?

Uh oh, which one was the 'first' next to last? I'll go back and number them since there are so many. I'm glad you dropped in for this segment of the trip Photolady! BTW, this photo buddy and I are coming out your way next fall! (I was there last fall when you saw my Crystal Mill post.)

Glad you enjoyed the set, FramerMCB--your taste runs toward the 'big picture', I see. Sometimes it's fun trying to capture the power of the water up close and personal, though.

Give me the day and I'll see what can be done. (I'll have to re-import so as not to lose the current settings in LR.) If it turns out okay, I'll send you a PM with a heads up.

I appreciate your kind words, DrWilk--we definitely went from hordes to solitude. Same thing at Sunwapta Falls. The downside of the early mornings was the ever present dark cloud cover. Kinda plays havoc with doing stop-action on the water while keeping the ISO low.
I did go down to the river 10 years ago, but not this time. Neither of us had 'happy' knees after all the trekking we were doing!

Excellent photography! I like that you used shutter speeds that capture the water looking like water and not flowing milk.

BTW: I meant to mention--I really liked your pix. We both seem to like the same kinds of shots. I have been shooting for some 60 years. Alyn

Glad you liked these, rlaugh! I just re-posted them in B&W for Framer and would be curious to see what you think of the effectiveness of the conversions.
