Big Island and the Whale shark

When I saw the whale shark I was in the boat whale hunting. The others are some of my snorkeling pictures. The turtle and I got caught behind a wall when the current started getting a little strong so we were both trying to move but not getting very far and not wanting to hit the wall we just kind of rocked a while. We finally got moving ... him going one way and me the other. He was about 6 ft. below me. I was thrilled. We were at Kahalu'u park and lots of turtles hung around there. No cropping was done. The last are just some beautiful fish in very clear water and I don't know their names. One more of the whale shark up close. They are goofy fish. I think I put them up before on the regular sites.

This is a close up. He just kept hanging around the boat. We had to keep moving around so he wouldn't be hit with the prop..

Yep,mine to.i know a lot of places won't let you dive (scuba)with them but would you have been allowed to swim with them or snorkel around the boat? Would have been real tempting.

These gentle giants are truly a diver's rarity. I was fortunate to come across this Whale Shark during a surface interval while diving the back wall of Molokini Crater off of Maui. At first we were the only boat there and I swam along side this beautiful creature for almost an hour. Soon the word got out and before I knew it there were boats everywhere. I took as many pics as I could with my canon point and shoot. These are the best. Hope you enjoy.

Scubadoo,
Thanks. I have plenty of underwater images, most of the amazing sea life along the shores of South Maui. I lived there for almost 7 years working as a Padi MSDT and underwater photographer for the Maui Ocean Center documenting the local underwater life. I'll upload a few more.

The guide said if we'd had suits and he wasn't trying to see a whale (he had to give us a free trip if we didn't, which we didn't) :-( that we could. They had to cut the engine because he wanted to hang out by the boat and they were afraid he'd get hit by the propeller. He said they were great to be in the water with. He was so curious. That would have been so exciting. He said they were pretty rare. Kevin, is that so?

Those are great shots. Those suckers are huge, aren't they? By the way, welcome. We are trying to build up this area of the forum so it's always nice to see a new underwater lover.

Those are awesome. I love the turtles. The frog fish must be pretty deep. I snorkel and if it weren't for health reasons I would love to dive. Maui is my absolute favorite of the islands. The snorkeling on the Big Island was great but I'm in love with Lahaina. We usually stay at Napilli or Kapalua Bay. I'm a member of the Pacific Whale foundation and go whale watching with them around Mar. to see the babies when we can. It gets to be a toss up whether to go in the summer for snorkeling or winter for the whales.

Yes, that is so. It is rare to see them around here. I hear about it happening no more than 1/2 dz times a year.
