Interesting. What were you shooting with? The narrow depth of field is always nice for these types of shots, but I wonder if your exact focus point could have been better. The owl, in particular, would be much improved with sharp eyes, I think. Rules are made to be broken, but generally you want an animal's eyes in focus just like a human animal's eyes.

So what we're we shooting with? I might have a suggestion or two.

nikon 5300, 70/140 as dx lens..I,m just getting into it. bying equipment allittle at a time bought 2 nice tripods good will, 4 bucks ea. spend alot of time on ebay, purchased 2 ttl flashes and radio triggers 2 recievers.got some color defusers gel,s back ground stuff..check out the wasp pic,s I took very hard to freeze one , cast a shaddow on the lilly pad. I spend alot of time on utube,good stuff on photography, the main thing is I,m having fun. and I appreciate the help, your offering,...we live in bremerton
have a small farm geese, chickens pygme goats and miniture horses.we don,t have any animal,s that could hurt us. we love to feed the geese and sit on our chairs and watch them..oh those golden years...take care...Bill and Linda Jones

Sounds like you have lots of subjects to photograph, Bill, and some pretty good equipment to do it with. I recommend you read up on the excellent focusing system your camera has - in particular, spot focus (not center spot) for these kinds of shots. You can select which focus point to use, so without recomposing, you select the focus point over the part you want in sharp focus before shooting. For the owl, it would be the eyes. My Sony shows a bunch of rectangles for focus points and I use a joystick to select which one I want to use when I have my camera set in spot mode. Check out your Nikon to see how to do that and I think you will be very pleased with the results.
