I recently went to car dealers in my area. Inquired as to if they had any cars with very few whistles and bells. They laughed me off the show room floor. I was not looking for new cars. Just wanted one that had rear view camera and what used to be the norm.

I do not want all the gadgets to distract me while I'm driving.

Like someone with either a very wide foot or very narrow foot.
Stores do not carry them cause there are few customers for them.
They are in the very bottom or top in shoe size.

Just curious. Any ideas as time frame? Back 5-8 years?

A Chevy WT Pickup, come to mind. I'm with you, PinOakEO. Back in the day, a manual xmisssion was standard. You want an auto slushbox, that'l cost extra. Now, it's extra for a manual, if one's even available! You don't want/need AC. Tough luck. Some cars can be had without, but it'll cost you extra. Sucks when you have to pay for them to keep something. With the exception of the new Chevy Z28. No AC. It is an option though. I personally don't want a sunroof/moonroof. But if you want this, or that, it's not available without taking the sunroof also.
Sunroofs will leak, in time.

You could buy an older vehicle and "go through it."

Well, I need a rear camera for my car because my neck it not as limber as it once was.

But, I need a front camera for my car, in case it's in an accident, and I need to prove that it was not my fault.

and, I might need an interior camera to protect me against improper arrest and detention.

and, I might need a gun...

Yes, when chevrolet's lowest model was presumed to be the 210 sedan, the commercial side sold a model 150 business coupe. It was so stripped down that the back seat did not have cushions or upholstery. The seat bottom and seat back were fiberboard panels, allow salesmen to carry more product.

True story, and I know because I had a Chevrolet 150 business coupe. In 1958 Chevrolet also made what looked like a standard station wagon with windows all around. However, it had a one piece tailgate that lifted up much like SUV's today but without the hydraulic lifts. It made a bigger opening to get product into the back, unlike the two piece tailgates on standard station wagons... AND NO, it was not a Panel Delivery. It had four doors and glass all around like a regular station wagon. Very Rare, but a fellow here in town owns one and takes it to car shows because of it's uncommon utility.

The reason you can't find what you want today, is because when they were available, nobody bought them.

Our society suffers greatly from a trend called "Conspicuous Consumption". If they still offered stripped models today, then salesmen would actually have to work for the sale. Now advertising media makes the sales and salemen just take the orders. And even then, they just take the orders and run them into the Sales Managers office who takes them and "sticks" it to the buyer on the finance and insurance end.

The house makes 40% of all the finance and insurance premiums up front, with the Sales Manager basically dealing away the salesmans profits.

It's a complex business model, but the forefront of it is that basic models simply are invisible to the consumer.

Now, here's one for you... The camera manufacturers are doing the same thing to photographers and other consumers.

The practice is rampant.

Software people do the same thing. How would you like Adobe to quit adding features you don't need, so they can nick you again with new versions?????
