In House WI-FI Question

I'm using an Apple Airport Extreme router for my in house wi-fi. I have 3 tablets and a laptop that are using this setup. The tablets are iPad Air, Dell (el cheapo freebee), and a Samsung Galaxy. The Dell, Samsung, and laptop have reliably received internet connections from the same location in my house. However, the iPad looses the connection about every other day and requires me to unplug the router for a few seconds and then plug it back in (both the ethernet and power cables).

The iPad was new in February. Do you think there is a problem with the iPad, or something I'm not aware of?

I use an iPad mini and have never had it lose the connection on my in-house wifi. I would suspect an issue with your iPad Air

I have a similar issue. We use Verizon FIOS internet and their newest router. We have three Apple computers, a PC, two iPhones and two iPads. Only my iPad mini loses wifi connection. I need to restart it and then the wifi connection works. I have an appointment at the Genius Bar this Wed.

I occasionally have that problem. I have wondered if it is possible interference from the covers we put on the iPads, little magnets and such built in. Maybe try it out of the case and if that doesn't change anything call Apple.

I have also noticed that my wife's iPad Air 2 picks up the signal in spots of the house that my iPad air won't. I installed a range extender in the house and that seems to have helped.

I do use a cover on the iPad. Will remove now and see if the connection remains over several days. However, I just remembered I had Verizon DSL from Feb when I bought the iPad until June when I switched to Comcast. Had the cover since new. The problem seems to have arisen after the switch. But my other 3 devices have not been affected.

wi-fi is a vhf (actually, microwave) radio connection, one can expect dead spots and multipath cancellation.. the fact that a range extender (amplifier!) seemed to have helped some is the clue, although it won't fix multipath cancellation.. The state of Pa really really got snookered with that when they went from 48 motorcycles to UHF fer their public service several years ago... de k2lck Ed

Wi-Fi is both a blessing and a curse, in my opinion. The terminology is a problem, too. There are extenders, expanders, and switches, and they all seem to do the same thing. I wanted to get a signal into the living room and also upstairs. I had to put two devices in the living room and another - wireless - upstairs. Although everything works off the same original Wi-Fi signal, the network in the living room and upstairs has a different name, and I have to select that to connect. I would expect that taking the signal from the main router and sending it to other rooms would result in the same signal being sent on the same network, but I guess not.

When that connects via the range extender, does the network have the same name? I have Home Network and Home Network_Ext.

Yes, I have an extender also. It must be synchronized with your router and then takes on the same name. Our router is upstairs and the extender is on the first floor which helps there and in backyard.

The one I have takes on a new name so yes you have to select it and connect. That is a pain and I wish it were seamless but it does make my devices work all over the house and the deck for beautiful days like today!

Update on cover removal - did not make a bit of difference. Connection lasted about a day & an a half. I'm sure the issue is not signal strength, as the settings indicate signal strength is good. Again, my other 3 devices stay connected. Have tried all from the same exact location (chair). I am puzzled that connection to the net is temporary or fleeting.

If you are technical, try setting the Ipad to a Static IP Address.
Of course with the appropriate subnet, DNS, gateway, etc.
That solved my sister's Smart TV dropping connections to her router.
It has to do with the ability of the device to "renew" it's IP Address every day or so.
Not knowing what router you have and what config you have set, I can't offer any other suggestions.

Dan, I have the Apple Airport Extreme router which is connected to my Comcast Modem. Guess I'm not technical since I don't know what a Static IP address is nor where to look for one.
