It depends sometimes folk like the foreground to be out of focus, lovely flower shots either way

Selective focus is a personal, artistic choice. There's no rule about foreground needing to be in focus. Plenty of examples by the pro's to back me up :)

I agree, It depends on your personal preference. As a beginner we should learn some basics as to what makes a pleasing photo for all to view. We can then branch out and experiment with photos that appeal to me personally. As time goes we find our own niche. We can break almost any rule in photography & do a photo that is pleasing to me but not to anyone else. Hey, If I like it I have a good photo.
