As a former resident of Long Island and Connecticut let me suggest a diferent returrn route from the Berkshires. Go east on the Mass. Turnpike to I-84 and visit Old Sturbridge Vilage. It is a Willmasburg VA class restoration--since it was done by the Rockefellers, too. A great day to soak in early Colonial history and architecture and life. then, return home on I-84 south and West on the Connecticut Trunpike I-95 back to NY.
Great photo ops along the way and if you have kids or grandkids, you will definitely return. You might also take a side 1/2 day to Old Mystic Seaport, too.
The Berkshires are execllent and beautiful. You're a little early for the Autumn Colors, but you should beat the crowds from teh summer music and tehater and the fall colors. Enjoy. You could do full length essay/study of churches, alone.

Problem here is that rt 84 does not cross rt 95. You have to take 84 to rt 91 south th 95. the 84 91 intersection is confusing. You must cross the Charter Oak Bridge on 84 to meet up with 91 south.. Then take 91 south to New Haven to 95 South to NY city, 91 South to New Haven takes about 1/2 hour. Hope this helps. Another option is to take rt 84 to the New York Thruway (rt 87) south to NY city.
