My first attempt at the "Moon"

The start of the night, there was this really cool eerie orange haze and clouds around the moon. I started snapping away and they turned out awful. The kind where you just send the pictures straight to the trash. After putting the kids to sleep, the night turned clear and long and behold the moon was in full display. Setup shop and took some pictures and played around with different settings. After about 50 pictures decided to see what I had accomplished.

Nikon D3100
55-300mm lens
aperture mode - set to max 5
f-stop f/14
ISO 400
timer yes

on Tripod

They look pretty good! I took some tonight too in preparation of taking a moon rising workshop in NJ overlooking the Statue of Liberty. I read somewhere that shooting the moon is similar to shooting the sun and to use the Sunny 16 rule which is aperture f16, iso 100, shutter 1/125. And if you go up in iso then follow with shutter (ex: iso 200/shutter 1/200, iso 400/shutter 1/400. I tried it tonight and it worked perfectly on the first shot. :)

Thanks for the great information! I'll have to try it out next time :) When do you plan on posting your NJ shots?

Soon..actually right now. But those shots didn't go by the sunny 16 rule. They were more complicated and I was glad that I was with a group and an instructor to give out settings and share her experience. The moon was pretty much behind the clouds the whole time and really hazy, but still looked cool.
