At my age, 88, I thought I'd seen everything -- but this is a stopper for me. The use of multiple portable confessionals in an open field at some kind of social event...? I would not have believed it.

Believe it. I was on the priest side of a similar confession arrangement at the Washington (D.C.) Nationals field when Pope Benedict VI visited. The lines were very long. There were about a dozen or so priests in a "pod" with members of religious orders directing the penitents to the next confessor who was free. I don't know how many pods there were. We were there for an hour prior to the beginning of Mass. I suspect there will be a similar arrangement before the Masses Pope Francis will celebrate while visiting the U.S. next month. It was deeply moving to be privileged to hear each penitent and give absolution.
