Not all prints are framed

I own a Canon PIXMA Pro-100, capable of prints up to 13x19-inch. I recently printed nearly a dozen 8.5x11-inch color images, destined for a local nursery that has a butterfly house. They laminated each print for display in the outdoor butterfly house, to protect from sticky little hands, and errant sprinklers.

Did you use a high quality paper or just an everyday type? Just curious.

I was able to purchase at substantial cost savings, previously opened and count-shortened, 25-sheet & 50-sheet packs of Epson and Canon gloss printing papers. Because of my calibrated monitor, my first prints match my monitor in color, exposure, and contrast, meaning no unacceptable prints.

Lamination will slow the effects of UV a little. Direct sun will probably fade them a bit faster than if they were under glass. Spraying with a good UV protectant before lamination helps, and the thicker the lamination, the better. Let the prints "out gas" under sheets of blank newsprint for 24 to 48 hours before spraying and another 24 to 48 before lamination.

Good to know! I will note for any future print laminations.

When I was in the lab, we always held prints for a day under newsprint. Epson recommends this for their Ultrachrome inks. If you frame under glass immediately, without allowing "out gassing," the inks give off solvents that create a haze on the underside of the glass.

Canvas prints should always be sprayed with an UV protectant. They are often displayed on stretchers, rather than framed under glass. Hence, the need for protection.
