A stop at a local camera store I happen to notice lots of lens for film camera.
Is there a way that a lens for a film camera could work on a DSLR?

Most all of the older Nikon lenses will work on my D300s. I still have all of my old lenses from back in the late 60's and they all work. Canon changed their mounting at some point so the oldest ones will not mount on the new Canons. I don't know the whole story on those.

I just had this conversation last week with Bedford Camera regarding Canon lenses. They tell me there is an adapter and might be worth it depending on the quality of the old lenses. I have a lot of FD lenses and am considering it. Of course, there would be on AF or IS. But it's at least worth checking out.

I've noticed the same things hanging around a local camera shop. I used to use a Minolta (yeah, I know.) and I know the lenses and filters are not compatible with Nikon. Too bad, but a lesson learned. :hunf: 8-)

But Minolta was bought by Sony and many Minolta lenses will work on the new Sony bodies.

I've tried adaptors before getting regular digital lens. The digital lens are far better. They are built for the digital camera which means they have anit-reflective coatings which keep light from bouncing back and forth from the lens to the sensor. Also, the newer lens designs may be better and you altering the focal length and placing yet another piece of glass in the way. I never had good results with the adaptors.

I'm in the same boat after rummaging through thrift stores and finding a bunch of old film camera bodies with a 50mm here and a 18~55 there. Especially if you find yourself the old heavy glass lenses it really makes landscapes and sunsets look amazing. So I had a bunch laying around and Pentax has stayed with the same mount for probably 40-50 years now and you can find cheap ($20 is CHEAP) lenses that really come in handy. With cannon they really want you to spend more money on them so they changed the mounts so you'll have to find yourself an adapter. Moral of the story is don't be scared to experiment with old lenses and never be afraid to bring an old film body home with you!

Just EXACTLY when did Nikon change a mount?????
I think you need to research the subjects you are making comments on before you open your mouth and make false statements in a public forum.

yes yes I'm sorry I miss spoke and I've never used a nikon I just know a few other people who have had trouble using old lenses due to the auto aperture pin screwing up their mounts (which is something you probably already knew) among other things. I see no need to get all angry I spoke to specifically when it should have been more general. Maybe so I can learn have they also specifically made the mounts the same so you can keep old lenses?

Also I just looked through my bag of old film bodies and the lens I have that only fits one nikon body but not the other two has a pretty shifty repair job done with an old adapter. perhaps this is what led me to believe the wrong thing. I do save the dates however and I bought this one at a thrift called comprenew two years ago.

Unless you have a modern (EOS) Canon body, many older film lenses made for your brand will work. The question is, is the glass really better than the comparable modern lens? It's a trade off - if you're OK with a 7 out of 10 quality match, paired with a 20 to 40% price differential, they may be a good deal.

I have a couple of Pentax screw mounts from the 80's that are OK, but they simply don't match the quality of my modern Canons. They are the only MF film lenses that I've found work at all on Canon EOS bodies.

You are new, so you will find out that there is a wealth of knowledge available on this forum, and no shortage of knowledgeable people to debunk false statements.
Nikon has always put their customers first and has stuck with the same F mount on their SLRs since the beginning. There have been modifications needed to advance as technology advanced in metering and autofocus, but the mount has not changed. The F mount was introduced in 1959.
Pentax has the same mount for 40-50 years? Its getting close. It was first introduced in 1975 so 37 years as of now. Prior to that all Pentax bodies used the threaded lensmounts. Olympus OM mounts were introduced in 1972. Minolta changed mounts at what seemed like regular intervals, 3 or 4 times. Canons FD mount came out in 1971, but was thrown out for the EF mount in 1990.
Then there was Practika, Mamiya, Vivitar, Ricoh and a slew of others who are no longer around. Now we also have the Sigma and Sony (who now uses the last Minolta mount), as well as the influx of 4/3's and micro 4/3's offerings.
That should be enough for today.
