James, be sure to check the post for the Jasper train set 'Waiting for the train in a sea of color'--I'm really wanting to know what you think, especially since you love trains!!

Sure wish I could have gotten a good picture of the train running eastbound but it just didn't work out for me. Still, we had a lot of fun listening for the thunder on the tracks and the whistle. But, because of the curve at each end of the tracks, the trains could sneak up on you mighty fast--as you can see on the ONLY eastbound train that I did capture.
The first picture was taken with a shutter speed of 1/400; I'm thinking that "the one that got away" must have been a much slower shutter speed. How did that happen - were you using a slower shutter speed to photograph something else and didn't have time to switch to the higher speed?

Yep, we had just driven up when the train came into sight--so it caught me off guard and I forgot where I had left the camera settings. Isn't there a technique for getting motion at one end of a moving object with a fixed outline at the other end? I may be thinking of rear & front curtain flash for night shots with lights, but it would have been neat to get extreme blur of the train at least once.

Thanks, Joe! I was surprised to see you here--thought you were en route now and out of internet service--but hope you get to see a few more from the trip before you go 'Under'! :D
