From a printing neophyte--is the ink dye or pigment? I have seen both in reviews.
Is there a viable alternative to purchasing the Canon replacement ink cartridges? If not, where are the best prices?
I can only answer for my Canon PIXMA Pro-100, which uses standard pigment-type inks. To my understanding, just the most expensive, commercial-level printers use dye-based inks.

I have a 2-year warranty on my Pro-100. Using ANY ink cartridge other than a new Canon-manufactured cartridge will void the warranty. Each cartridge contains an electronic chip that communicates to the printer as to its authenticity and history (which is recorded in the Pro-100 software). If service is required, Canon will query (via WiFi/internet connection) the printer for cartridge history, seeking cartridge violation. Once the warranty expires, non-new cartridge use is a moot point.

That stated, here is an interesting FAQ on the subject:

Please don't be offended, but that is incorrect. The Pro-100 uses dye based inks. The more expensive Pro-10 and Pro-1 use pigment inks.

I stand corrected. Per http://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/catalog/pixma-pro-100 , the Pro-100 uses "8-ink dye based ChromaLife 100+ system".

Regardless of ink type, the Pro-100 has been a very good "value printer" for a year or two. I've never found or read any serious complaint as to print quality. Some suggest that the ink price is high, but I can's seem to find any printers that have significant cheaper "quality" prints.
It may change as Epson seems to be releasing a series of new models.

I just bought the Canon Pro-100. It was on sale plus a rebate. I sent the rebate in, and the store gave me a $75.00 store credit. So basically, in the end I got the printer for $50.00
