I very much admire anyone who can read a manual straight through.

I think they might be more than a little wacky, but I admire their ability to endure!

The full title is David Busch's Sony a6000 ILCE-6000, guide to Digital Photography. Inside publication date given is 2016 David Busch. The book has 349 pages. I have been buying new & used cameras for 62 years and never have I seen a book with as much information as this one has. This camera has capabilities that I could not even dreamed of. A off the cuff guess comparing the tiny little owners manual that comes from Sony with the new camera might be that it contains a 1000th of what the David Busch's book contains. I have been doing photography all my life since I was a kid and both as an amateur and professionally for 17 years and I again would have to guess that I did not know 90% or more of what is in the book about "this" camera.
My advice would be buy the book. It's under $25. You won't be sorry.
Good luck.

The Sony guide thst came in the box has something like 10 words of every single feature, so in that sense reads like a Table of Contents. The in-camera guide, accessed by the C2 button reads with the same brevity. Once you have digested either Busch's or Friedman's book, the Sony stuff could be memory jogs.

THANK YOU, cmc! That explains the ~9 month delay in the release of DD Busch's book on the Sony a6000. I had long since given up on buying it.

When I saw the anticipated release date on Amazon I messed around and found David's eBook version from Apple iBooks. The iBook version is really more convenient, especially when traveling as I always have my iPad on trips and almost never take books.

Wait a minute! John, JUST to confirm, you mean that AT THE TIME when Amazon initially gave a release date for Busch's book on the a6000, specifically, of last October/November [2014] I believe, you were then on or within a month after that date able to acquire Busch's book via iBooks?

Thank you, lev29

Can't speak for other brands but owners of Canon cameras are lucky. The only part of the user manual they'd need to read is in the front of the book under a section titled "Nomenclature". That's it! Read and learn everything under this section and the user is going to know everything about that camera.

What I said and how it was reinterpreted are different. I said "When you get your camera do the basic setup with the instructions and start shooting -- as you work things through, spend a lot of time with the camera and the manual -- solving problems and learning capabilities."
When I got my newest camera I gave my old kit to my daughter. While teaching her how to use it, I learned things I had not known over the years I owned it, some of which would have been useful. I decided not to repeat the same mistake again. Bismarck said “Fools learn from experience. I prefer to learn from the experience of others.”
